The Viper has stalled for a bit for a number of reasons and will resume next week.

In the mean-time, I am busy in the kitchen late at night working on preliminary modelling and planning for my next big project.

For now, I am fleshing out a 550mm tall paper model of the kick-ass Enforcement Droid, to have a look at the different parts and start planning for a life-size build at 3.5 metres tall.

The idea here is to establish a shape, however flimsy, as a guide. Standard A4 is difficult to work with because it buckles and distorts so much, but it is far more accurate to the sub-millimetre than thicker material. The inside can be lined with pieces of thicker card, hot-glued, or even filled with expanding foam. Once supported, the outside can be hardened, refined and sanded. After that, holes can be drilled, parts can be cut off and detailed, replaced, refined – the sky is the limit.

All the big pieces now done and hardened with resin. I've got a few little detailed bits which are quite fiddly, especially with my still broken finger. Next step to make a hole in each piece to fill with a slush coat of car bog mixed with resin. They will be pretty solid then and i can sand/shape/drill etc.

    No need mate - it's a drone! :D

While I’ve been slow to get in the shed and pour the slush-cast into every little piece, I thought of a good idea. Some of the shapes are flat, so why not just trace them onto the correct thickness of wood and cut them out with a jigsaw? Worked a treat!

Starting to assemble the pieces and bolt/screw together. A bit of trial and error as there are no instructions.

And here I was thinking that it was going to be a 1987 ED209.

Got lots done today. Spent most of the day working on the Viper then switched to the relative warmth of the shed late tonight to continue with ED209.

Now that all the parts are done and it is loosely assembled, I can solidify it to be free-standing then work on smoothing and detailing.

The balance is perfect, but strength is lacking. Touch it and it breaks. Resin without mat is just too brittle. So, I took it apart again and am replacing each part with either wood or metal, depending on thickness and detail required.

Burning the midnight oil tonight. Piece by piece, finding ways to use scrap materials around my shed, suitable to replace the paper model parts. Great to have a three dimensional object to scale and compare.

Aluminium armour plate on left replacing flimsy paper and resin plate on right.

Turned the weapon pod pivot plates on the lathe then carved the rest out of ply. Both arms done, ready to paint.

I thought I'd post a reminder here that if you are a fan of Baz's projects, you can win yourself one of his custom knives, by offering a logo in this graphic design competition!

If you go back to my first post, as with my other life sized build, (Viper below), this is the planning model for a life size build. Gotta start somewhere sir.

    Baz.
