    Hi I'm in Victoria and in the process of being a instrumentation electrician by two huge companies but I am still suss about the idea. After doing my 4 years of apprenticeship will i still be able to get my A grade license?

    From memory i was told that you do not receive it? I just wanted to make sure 100% before accepting either job.

    Thank you

    After you complete your 4 year apprenticeship you can sit your A grade exam.
    Though I believe an instrumentation Electrician is another 2 years on top of your 4 year app. Don't quote me I just remember hearing something like that.

    Straight from the ESV site, here's the criteria to get an A-Grade.

    * Criteria 1
    o Completed a four year contract of training as an apprentice electrician that included at least 12 months experience carrying out electrical installation work with written confirmation by the employer; and
    o Hold a Certificate III in Electro-technology Systems Electrician; and
    o Satisfactorily completed the Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA) conducted by a body approved by the ESV, which is currently NMIT and EPIC Industry Training Board

    * Criteria 2
    o Already holds an Electrician (Supervised) License; and
    o Holds a Certificate III in Electro-technology Systems Electrician or equivalent; and
    o Completed 12 months electrical installation work as the holder of a Electrician (Supervised) License with written confirmation by the employer;
    o Satisfactorily completed the Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA) conducted by a body approved by the ESV, which is currently EPIC Industry Training Board and NMIT

    * Criteria 3
    o Holds a Supervised Worker's License; and
    o Completed a four-year contract of training as an electrical fitter, and
    o Completed 12 months electrical installation work as the holder of a Supervised Worker's License with written confirmation by the employer; and
    o Satisfactorily completed the Licensed Electrician’s Assessment (LEA) assessment conducted by a body approved by the ESV, which is currently NMIT and EPIC Industry Training Board.

    * Criteria 4
    o The person's standard of qualifications, proficiency and experience in electrical installation work is at least of an equivalent standard to that required under 1, 2 or 3 above.

    Why don't you ask the relevant licencing authority in your state? For Victoria I believe it's here - http://www.esv.vic.gov.au/

    I know in Queensland Instrumentation Fitters only receive an Electrical Fitter's licence, which carries certain restrictions but still entitles you to the 'electrician' title. But most 'electricians' are Electrical Fitter/Mechanics, which means they can do anything except overhead power lines, and specialist cable jointing.

    Edit - damn, beaten to it.

    Uhh excuse my ignorance but that does not answer my question.

    "at least 12 months experience carrying out electrical installation" That is safe to say it's not very specific. I mean someone fill me in on what I'm missing here.

    Instrumentation=A grade?

    Does anyone know the type of electrician that I am talking about where you cannot apply for A grade?

    Thanks

    you wont get your A grade license as an instro

    you will still have to do an apprenticeship and cert3 electro systems to get it

    have a guy that is in the same boat at work.. qualified instro been doing it for years knows his shit but cant get his A grade unless he goes through it all

    Don't know about other states, but in QLD it is far easier to get an electrical fitter/mechanics licence, then gain instrumentation qualifications than the other way around.

    Back in the 80's, instros were given dispensations if you did an A-Grade apprenticeship, due to their prior knowledge. Give ESV a call and see if this still applies. I can imagine you'd still have to do the 4 years of actual time.

    I called up esv today, found out that instrumentation is actually one notch higher than your say average electrician mech/fitter. You do 4 years of apprenticeship which that enables you to apply for cert 3 electrotechnology which then you can apply for LEA exam but instrumentation apprenticeship is 5 years as opposed to normal apps. So after get your cert 3 at your own discretion you then do one year extra for cert 4 which is instrumentation.

    Also with HV power line workers the lady said it's more of an "registration" as to a license when applying for final exam.

    Hope this helps other people :) Thanks for the comments guys.
