According to Dpreview the ixus 430 is an upgraded ixus 400 (i.e. still 4mp) while the new ixus500 is the flagship 5mp model.

Any ideas on when these cameras will make their way to Aus?

    I just ordered one

    1. Canon Powershot S400 Digital ELPH Camera [qty 1]
    2. High-Speed 128MB Compact Flash Memory Card [qty 1]
    3. DigPro MINI DIGITAL CAMERA DELUXE CARRYING CASE - DP1000 [qty 1]
    4. Sakar Lens Cleaning Kit [qty 1]

    Final Price: $387.00 + 13$ shipping (USD)

Can't wait to get it - it will be my first digital camera.. When you hook it up to the PC does it act like a USB memory stick and oyu just pull the pics off it or what?

Or do you need one of these for it to act like a memory stick?

You will need to install the TWAIN driver which should come with your camera. This enables Windows to recognize your camera as an imaging device. When you plug the camera into your PC, it will launch the default application. You can also program it to open a folder.

Ok thanks mate. The only computer I have access to is at work so installing things might be a bit tricky.. Might have to get the reader I think.

If you're running WindowsXP, you won't need any drivers at all.

I've had my IXUS 400 for a while now. When I bought it, I got it for $750. I also got a 512MB CF Card pretty cheap for $180 too! One noteworthy buy, was the soft case that I got for $16 on ebay:

they're really nice. So if you guys are looking for a case then get one of these. You can also get these good small tripods from ebay to, it was silver and similar to this one but it wasn't telescopic:

    - Complexity.

The case I bought for my IXUS400 was the Crumpler 'Sporty Guy 02', I think it was for $36.99 or something around that price. Very snug fit, well padded, rugged and durable :)

Gonna buy one of the IXUS 500's (IXY 500) for the GF in Japan next month. Apparently has the G5 CCD in it should be as good as the 400 but better :)

Can the likes of this camera be used as a 640x480 webcam?

Here's another very crisp photo I took, of my foglight getting own3d big time.

Some idiot must have pulled it out, and without me realising I drove the car. The light must have been dragging along the bitumen for quite some time :upset:

I don't think so. I have a Canon S40 which I have tried to use as a webcam. Does not work. They MAY have updated their TWAIN software since I got my camera ...

Interesting photo in what I assume is macro mode, up the aperture a bit to say f8 ish (assuming you can manually control it) - or just get rid of the macro mode, and it'd turn out much better.

    yep, macro mode.

    Can't control aperture with the IXUS 400, it's a point-and-shoot camera :p

Did you know the IXUS 400 uses a Sony LCD? No wonder it's so crisp! I gotta say, Sony makes the best LCDs... :)

For some reason, I took my camera out of its bag one day and the screen was just broken on it. Cost me $145 to get it repaired :(
ahh well. Could have been worse I guess.
