I’m planning a UK trip for this year.

We’re thinking we could spend 2 nights in Orkney Scotland in early October.

Can anyone give me a realistic probability given the time of year and the window of 2 nights, that we will see an Aurora?

I'd say the chances are rather low. The aurora needs to be pretty active to be seen from Scotland. You also need clear skies - something that Scotland is not really know for! You might get lucky though and be there during a geomagnetic storm. This is the best site for aurora forecasts. http://www.aurora-service.eu/aurora-forecast/

A quick google for photos from Scotland and they look similar to those taken in Tasmania as far as how overhead it is. Cheaper and quicker to get to if there is a good forecast since forecasting more than a few days out is pretty much impossible and even then it is hit and miss.
