I'm beginning to feel the same about Hollywood. Predictable scripts written to a formula, "happily ever after" endings, two dimensional chiselled-jaw heroes and trivialised "good versus evil" plots against whichever baddy the US hates this week (1980s bad guys were all Russian, 1990s bad guys all Middle Eastern, now everyone's a terrorist) . Yawn.

Yeah, when Netflix court a bunch of indie comic book writers to make something without restriction.

And as much as I love Netflix *right now*, I also loved Hollywood at one point, before they became too scared to do anything off-script. It's the inevitable destiny of companies to go from quirky, unique and free to bloated, slow and petrified of pissing off the mainstream.

Yeah, I say "guys" to anything more that 1 person, regardless of gender.

    bunch of dudes? "Hey guys"
    bunch of girls? "Hey guys"

Serves me fine, and if someone gets offended, well, fucking avoid them forevermore. Intent conveys a lot more than words.

What if you (a male) were at a workplace that was majority female, and the managers/bosses referred to everyone as girls at meetings.

"So girls, today we are going to focus on X"

    Would you feel excluded?

Cutting the quote there, because it's never happened for me yet. And not for lack of trying, including large amounts of dollars on marketing, recruitment and HR drives.

So at this point it feels like the problem might be outside of that scope. Say, at the drastic drop off in women choosing to study STEM after the age of 15 or so.

But I'm willing to be proven wrong. Many companies and many years later, the data doesn't appear to be significant though.

Given this post is in the programming subforum, and started with a presentation at a technical conference, I'm limiting scope to related industries.

I wouldn't work in the fields you mentioned, simply because the money and conditions are terrible.

But facetiousness aside, I understand your point. (And agree too a point as well). Merely pointing out that fixing inclusivity through language might not be the way we "fix" the gender diversity "problem" in tech.

I think in the short term it does more harm than good.

Most management I know would prefer to use the gender neutral term "MINONS" we need to develop a plan... yadda yadda and works at every level all the way down. So all management can use the term to their subordinates.

The term fuckhead is gender neutral, "Hey you pack of fuckheads, stop being such fuckheads"

    Problem solved

Use of the word colleagues used to be a flag for groupspeak at a former employer, funny how context and interpretation is important.
Another workplace considered the word 'noted' as 'acknowledged, and ignored' and all of a sudden people were offended that their all important perspectives were merely 'noted'.

As a male I don't have feelings, so no offence taken.

(funny how offence can only be taken, not given, strongly implies where the problem is).
