A UNSW doctoral student is pursuing her PhD in the topic of Australia's scientific decline, particularly in space science:
Lost in space: Australia dwindled from space leader to also-ran in 50 years
22 SEP 2017 KERRIE DOUGHERTY
Australia was a significant global space player during the 1950s and 1960s. Now we're one of only two OECD countries not to have a space agency. What happened?
The eyes of the world’s space expertise will be on Australia this month, as Adelaide hosts the world’s largest space conference.
The meeting occurs in the 50th anniversary year of the launch of Australia’s first satellite, WRESAT. This project occurred as the culmination of a decade in which Australia was seen as a significant player in the space arena.
But now, Australia is perceived to be underperforming in the space sector. It remains one of only two OECD countries not to have a space agency (the other nation is Iceland).
So what happened in the past half century to slow us down? My doctoral thesis is attempting to find the answer.
It makes me sad
Hockey promoted CSIRO's feat of inventing WIFI to celebrate 'Straya Day. Everyone savages him in return, raising the issue of him tabling cuts the department's funding in 2014.
To add to the irony, nobody outside Australia thinks the CSIRO invented WIFI anyway.
The Kiwi's seem to be killing us at every turn. With new successes in space, better telecommunications, and I'm not sure about their science. Though it just seems Australia is stuck in a political shit fest where very little gets done.
Space is science - with so many different fields. Communications is science (laser, light, etc). They also take Ecology and Environment serious as they don't have a mineral council bribing and manipulating their Govt.
FFS they are looking at Dental Bulk Billing.
This Liberal govt is defunding and de-prioritising science. They would rather spend money on border farce stop-da-boatz, more investment properties for everyone and giving big business tax cuts. Science is our future prosperity, but these blind wombats running our country just do not see the bigger picture with this.
When was it at its height?
