Im cleaning my CPU (Athlon XP T-bred) to get rid of thermal paste. Ive done the core, but there is hardened paste around it. Whats the best way to get it off?

I've previously used head cleaning fluid - some type of Alcohol. With those cotton bud (ear) things.
Cleans almost enything off anything. Dries off nicely as well.
 Make sure the area is well ventilated

if u have glasses use the cleaning cloth that comes with it. It wipes it clean really good.

that would most likely be isopropyl alcohol.

Acetone (Nail Polish Remover) + Cotton Buds works great for me.

I use metho and tissues usually.

If it needs scraping, I would cut up some plastic (ice cream container etc) to make a scraping tool for the really hard stuff.

A 3rd for isopropyl alcohol. Look for Isocol in your supermarket as that's generally the easiest from to find. There's been ocassions when I've run out and I've found that nappy wipes also come in handy (as they contain isopropyl alcohol but also fragrance and other things).

i always get my 99.99% isopropyl from the chemist.
as you can tell from the percentage, it is very pure. it's also very expensive, but unlike most isopropyl products you'll find at the supermarket, it doesn't have any fragrances or other things to leave behind in the form of a residue.

we use acetone at work, but only because the volume of it that we go through makes it more cost effective than using isopropyl.

Injection swabs from the chemist are perfect, they generally contain around 70% IPA (the other 30% is 'clean'), the cloth is lint free, and they are dirt cheap, I get a pack of 100 for $5 at my local chemist. What more can you ask for?

    Cheap chemist? Never.

I can get around 70% isopropyl bottle (473 ml bottle to be exact) from an oriental store in my local shopping centre.

I believe they are less than $5, may even be $3.

I have had to use degreaser before because there was so much hard crap on the core from a heat pad and it took a long time to finish aswell

Yes they will - you just need to rub it with a cloth or paper towel. It will dissolve AS5 by itself to some degree but it needs a bit of elbow grease...

    Methylated Spirits (denatured methanol)

But you should give it a follow-up clean with isopropyl alcohol or similar to get rid of any detergent or residue from the degreaser and as mentioned above a bit of elbow grease...
