A little off topic, but if you don’t ask you don’t know…

As a kid in the 80s I always watched people making instant coffee or drip coffee where they filled the cup up with hot black stuff then added a dash of milk to make a “white” coffee. In my world black meant just fill it with coffee, white meant leaving enough space for that dash of milk.

As you have all just said, modern coffee shop coffee just doesn’t do it for me either as it’s mostly milk. When I make my own either with my machine at home or aero press at work I fill a mug with coffee then add a tiny dash of milk…

So what is this called in coffee shop talk? How do I ask for an actual cup full of coffee without having to explain that?

A Long Black, or an Americano. Pretty much the same thing, just the order of shot and water AFAIK

You could ask for a macchiato, they'll probably ask you more questions though. Apparently (so the barista I spoke to yesterday) they can make them all sorts of different ways/amounts of milk/number of shots

Which is why I never understand why people order the big sizes at coffee shops. You're basically paying for a cup of milk.

Yeah so the 16oz cup has a heap of milk but the same amount of coffee.

Commonly chosen by people who "cannot live without their coffee" when it's 90% milk.

I quizzed them very early on as to what was what :D. The middle one is poor, as you say, it just has more milk but not more coffee. The bigger one has more coffee as well as more milk.

Just to make it even more of a crap shoot. Better to have it at home.
