I have been fighting intermittant problems when I cold boot my PC. Shortly after turning the power on, I get one long beep followed by three short beeps. If I do nothing, the computer does not boot. To work around, all I have to do is hit the reset button and it will boot fine. It seems as though after some period of time from the last time Windows was installed this begins to happen. But I can't be absolutely sure. One thing that is definate, once it begins, it won't go away until I do re-install Windows. I have messed with the power options in the BIOS and any other setting that I could even remotely imagine could be causing this problem. I have an ASUS P3V4X motherboard, 256 Mb of RAM, a Creative GeForce 2000 vid-card, a PIII-500 processor, w/Win-98 se for an O/S. I show no hardware conflicts in the Device Manager, and other than the intial problem at cold boot, the system performs fine. Anyone got any suggestions?
crap there is a meaning to those beeps.... like a code or something im straining to remember them.... grr is your 256mb ram in one stick or two? if its in two all i can suggest is to take one stick out and try it... then put it back in and take out the other one....... ya know, so u can try it with 1 stick on 128 at a time or if you have got one stick on 256 then maybe you could find/borrow some ram off a mate to check i cant think of anything else but ram that the prob could be what brand is your ram?
http://www.google.com/search?q=award+bios+beep+codes&sourceid=opera&num=25 That could be what you're looking for.
Finally found the prob....through some more research in the forums. The vid-card draws so much current @ boot that mobo thinks its a spike or short and shuts the agp slot down. Found a link to do a mod on the mobo to fix the prob. Thanx for the input tho!!!
Cold Boot Fix Sorry for the delay.... Here is the link for the cold boot fix: http://www.btinternet.com/~p3v4x/ Not for the timid.....involves a soldering iron and some wire! Choose "Analysis" on the bar at the left and it is the selection: VR-MOD BY FROGMASTER Good luck, brave soul.... I have not yet disassembled my pc and attempted this. I have full intention of doing so, as I cannot boot w/o hitting the reset button (just haven't had time).
http://www.btinternet.com/~p3v4x/ I am looking for this modification, that link doesn't seem to work? My GeForce worked most of the time on cold boot but now - doesn't. I would sure appreciate it if someone has the instructions or another link... Thanks
beep codes i know of: long beep followed by 3 short beeps = video card problem long repeating beeps = ram problem
My asus book comfirms 1beep followed by 3 short beeps = video card not found or video card memory bad seems your in the right area..
No that is the cold boot issue we get with the p3v4x, though when I got it it was just a blank screen. If reset works it is the cold boot issue we get. A GF3 works I hear as does a GF2mx. The mod link is redundant but I have a download of the mod and photos if any1 wants it Tony Oh if u want the html file PM me l
shit man, hapens to me too. Exept instead of hitting reset button, i have to switch it off then back on. Whats the link for modding ure mobo?
