I have one very frustrating problem that has me absolutely lost. When logged on as a normal user, they are unable to download files from Internet Explorer. The animated "File Download" window appears, followed by a message box saying IE can't download the file xxxxxx from the site yyyyyy etc. The window to choose save as / open is not shown at all. However when logged on with administrator rights, everything works perfectly.

    Configuration:
    Windows NT 4 Worstation SP6a
    Internet Explorer 6
with System Policies, NTFS, registry permissions setup for tight security. This is probably causing the problem...somewhere :(, any ideas?

Also, IE Zones are set to allow file downloads.

my first guess would be that regular users dont have write access to the Temporary Internet files directory - i could be way off, but thats my first punt

This could be just a corrupt profile
create a new user and try again..
If not then create a user with slightly more permissions untill
you find the minimum level of security

or you could wait till you get a better answer than this one.....:p

    Working at last!!

Actually Lurk, that is what I'd ended up doing after my last post.

Deleted the mandoratory (roaming) profile template from the server and made a new one. Wasn't what I really wanted to do, since the existing one had 10,000 preset window positions, etc, but at least it's working now.

As for the original culprit, that still remains a mystery!

There's a policy that you can apply which stops IE from being able to download files - I saw it the other day. You sure that wasn't set?

No, although I was trying to do that policy, except something else was giving it the same effect. I now have it working, and the IE restriction gives a different message to what was appearing before.
