Ok, found my old Sony PC5e miniDv camera circa 2000 and would like to get the footage from all my tapes onto my 2016 iMac.

The camera socket connects to 4 pin male 1394 FireWire.

I have tried a FireWire to USB cable and it doesn’t work.

Before I buy more cables and connectors that don’t work has anyone had any experiences?

I was thinking maybe the Apple thunderbolt to FireWire 800 then another attachment to get it down to 400 but maybe that won’t work either?

    Thanks!

put an 800 > 400 adaptor on the end of the thunderbolt > 800 adaptor - it'll work just fine

Otherwise if you're in Canberra I have firewire 400 equipped Powerbook you can borrow, just copy camera contents then use a USB stick to copy to your imac

Thanks mate, I’ll give that a go.

I’m in Brisbane but thanks for the PowerBook offer. :)

Got the new cable off eBay today (along with the Apple thunderbolt to firewire adaptor) and everything works well!

    Thanks Hater :)
