The thing is, RMS was never "appropriate". Even his most loyal fans find him difficult to talk to.

But, begrudgingly, the world needs him. For every shady, back-door, corrupt corporate deal done in secret where people would riot in the streets if they knew the truth, you've got Stallman sticking to his "honest but difficult to hear" rants out in the open.

Yin and yang. The industry is pretty shitty, but it would be a thousand times shittier without him.

Absolutely, and I'm not afraid to remind mouth-breathers about machines taking the repetitive, simplistic and trivial jobs away at a faster rate than ever.

When I was working for Avaya a decade ago they put out this shitty set of Ethics, compliance and other courses that ran like this. Someone in the office wrote a script that skipped all videos and answered the entire set of questions in < 10 seconds. The entire office used it and then got busted and they brought an instructor out and forced us to sit through training in person. Still worth it. Lessoned learned, 12 months later when they made us do it again (Corporate Policy) we put sleeps into the script to make it "realistic".

Literally doing this now. But the presenter has a nice touchscreen for dragging windows and annotating live diags, so woohoo.

My company just finished their new product ordering tool (for internal ordering when sales team sells something). Log onto sharepoint and update the Excel spreadsheet with your order details. Nice work guys, I'm sure there'll be no problems at all when it rolls out globally (and hundreds, if not thousands of sales people have access to the same spreadsheet)

edit: for clarity, IT had no involvement in this one so I'm not having a dig at IT folk.

Just the feeling of rage as I fumble around with the rewind and buffering just to see that bit of CLI again. That I could have just read at my leisure including 'rewinding' WITH MY EYES LIKE A BOSS.

Its even worse with you're trying to devops and read chunks of JSON/XML/whatever DSL your tool is using.

I can't even begin to contemplate the rage that would be induced in learning actual programming via videos.

What can I replace power with? More power.
I can however replace the internet with carrier pigeons and USB sticks, you might have new routing problems though :)

Protection circuits and equipment is actually just better designed, because they are designed as safety critical systems - different intent.

Never suggested power networks are an internet substitute, but they are highly complex, self protecting, resilient networks that have some positive features that have been, and could be taken up by Internoodels. Likewise Power models can learn things from the web of tubes.

I replied by explicitly calling out people, because your list was 'in IT in general' not specific to the incident. I think its important to call it out as the key (i guess only?) contributor to failure.
