I don't understand this, can you use a computer metaphor to explain it.

At some point I expect AWS to say to admins and developers, "OK you pack of mouth breathing oxygen thieves, enough is enough. No more unprotected buckets, we're sick of our name being dragged through the mud. Fix yo' shit, you have a month".

    And nothing of note happens.

What (if anything) would be the equivalent of a 9/11 for Information Security?

What will it take to get any real action happening?

well if the Equifax leak wasn't considered a 9/11 for data breach then nothing will be

The response to it, was nothing like the response to 9/11.

Even the OPM hack, which seems far more targeted didn't result in a "War on Cyberterror"

If nobody else cares, why do we?

North Korea hacks in and deletes all of Facebook's data, permanently.

No wait, that's just an internalised fantasy.

GitHub did this with private keys. Anything that looked like one got rejected/delete, and they were utterly unapologetic about it.

I'm with you - nothing will ever happen. Our world leaders are barely capable of connecting the dots on things that are blatantly and obviously a direct connection. Something as complex as information security that is a longer distance of cause and effect is entirely lost on them, so zero fucks are given.

What will (and does right now) happen is that a few ultra-conservative folk just knee-jerk to the whole idea of information security and just insist it be banned from the masses (ala AABill/ECHELON).

But as far as legislating against those who don't keep things secure, again, nobody at appropriate levels of power gives a shit, or is motivated or capable of doing so.

If there was a 'fappening' style leak for politicians, they'd make changes, but no one wants to see that shit, so it'll never happen.

A actually don't think they would. It would be amusing for a minute, then back to "boat people" and "terrorists and paedophiles".

(With "paedophiles" being an issue only outside the Church. Inside the Church, then they'll be character witnesses and friends).

    Would they though?

Celebrities carry more weight with the general populace than politicians... they all still have the latest iphones, and by extension. so do we.

And there have been shitloads of celeb photo leaks and ZERO has happened. For it to happen it'd have to be the better part of most of a parties candidates having embarassing photos leaked to have any real chance of something ever being done.

Or maybe someone getting into a major electricity grid and shutting down sydney for a day or two..... maybe then something might get done.

personal embarrassment is a big thing for politicians. especially if said embarrassment goes against their public standpoints

embarrassment for a celebrity is just another kind of publicity, and that's all good.

I would have agreed with you, right up until November 8, 2016. Then I saw a very fundamental change in how all politicians worldwide (not just a particular one) dealt with public opinion, and whether or not it embarrassed them.

We've turned a very interesting and concerning corner in a post-truth world.

If you wanna take down power, computer systems ain't the best way to do it. The effort to break in would be much less than to just idk, blow up some key HV lines.

This has gotta be a Friday Shitpost.

    Look at the Beetrooter.

Barnaby Joyce - loves "Family" so much, he decided one wasn't enough.
Thinks gays getting married will ruin the sanctity of marriage, while having a knocked up mistress.
Was a Member of Parliament, despite not being legally allowed to be due to citizenship.

Apart from being forced to fuck a Pig live on air, I'm not sure what else could personally embarrass the man more... Yet still, the good people of New England voted him back in RESOUNDINGLY.

Obviously this is a case of people electing someone whose values appear to most closely match their own.
