TIL that windows is shit because it lets retards do shit things and is forced to then allow shitty behaviour to hang around in perpetuity. Also, that SElinux contexts are sweetness and light (or maybe not).

Jokes aside I agree, by attracting the unwashed masses it led to the equivalent of chmod +rwx and run everything as sudo so it looks more retarded.

I mean lets look at file permissions..., Win has a single set of complicated permissions via AD/GPO via a single user directory method (AD).
Linux you have basic unix permissions, then optionally overlaid with ACLs, then optionally overlaid with SElinux or apparmor or whatever, and then god help you as you start to get into directory service integration (SSSD or nss_ldap/pam_ldap or whatever my head hurts).

Windows was designed as a single user system. Absolutely it took time for the multi-user bit to get sorted on the desktop front (i.e NT was fine, but general masses was pretty shit till really XP) - and then its taken *far* longer for admins to wrap their heads around it. But that doesn't mean the platform is shit - it just means that the base level of skill and understanding to perform any administrative or design tasks on linux is much higher than windows.

Having AD/NTFS permissions and grouping as my introduction to IT spoiled the fuck out of me. Using anything that can't do groups in groups, or the options you're given around inheritance - is basically taking me back to the stone age. If I'm greenfielding, I absolutely try not to design anything that would require blocking inheritance down an object directory tree - but not having the option, can be infuriating. Doing the same thing in brownfields is pretty much impossible.

And this is where anyone who comes to me and says "linux perms is easy" - I come around and say, go fuck yourself.

Actually NT3.51 had the same file permission schema as UNIX, obviously having poached all the VMS devs from Digital meant their first server OS was more UNIX then todays Windows.

i5/OS (OS/400) also never used for workstations, unlike AiX.

Still not as fully featured as sudo, even with full AD/GPO.

I'm not saying AD/GPO is terrible. I'm saying, on paper (seriously, read the man page), sudo offers more features, and Windows offering more stuff to catch up is a good thing.

Sounds like you haven't used KM since the beige days. KM > Canon on every day ending in y. KM are easier to admin and the print quality is noticeably better.

KM's pro gear is tight - but if you aren't buying digi stock and printing SRA, then you aren't playing the same game.

I spent 10 years working with Fuji Xerox copiers so I might be biased but I found them easier to work with than the KM's and Ricoh's I work with now.
