You find out just how stupid when you put in follow me printing at a site that's never had it. Watch the number of print jobs plummet and endless piles of unclaimed prints disappear. Blows my mind the amount of shit people print for no apparent reason.

Well, at 9am it is my job to runs these reports on yesterdays performance and print them out to these printers around the place for people to pick them up - No one has wanted those reports for the last 2 years.

I've done monthly reports here for the last 7+ years (not printed, but emailed). Always ignored.

Recently I expressed my dissatisfaction at things, and my intent to move on. Panic ensued, including immediate requests to document all the things that upset me. I pointed out the last 7 years of reports that clearly documented the "big ticket" items, and the ironic fact that those reports were ignored, and that in itself was part of my dissatisfaction.

    Silence. Stunned, guilty looks.

One rather new staff member commented a while back that they've never seen a place where IT were so willing to write reports, and management so disinterested in them. In their words "the exact opposite of almost everywhere else".

Sorry elvis i thought the above was just status quo for just about every place i've worked. One day i put a big comment into an email i sent out to the SLT/XLT team about the cronulla sharks rugby league win with a bunch of cronulla sharks hating folk, not a single fucken bite..... so obviously not even read. I'll likely get more bites from OCAU then our SLT Team.

In 2019 if its not a legal requirement to have someone physically sign a document I see no need for printers in the workplace, yes manufacturing and logistics may need printed documentations but for office workers who sit in front of a computer all day there should be ZERO need for printouts of any kind.

Related: I fill with rage when people say things like "I just can't read off a screen", and then proceed to spend hours a day on Facebook.

"Does suck" isn't the same as "can't do it".

Work sucks. We all do it.

By the numbers, I've worked for more places that demanded monthly reports than those that haven't.

Sample size = just me, and all that.

my mistake, I read it as management was interested in what IT had to say which seemed very odd.

I hate printing as much as the next admin but the above statement is ridiculous. There will always be a need for printing to some degree unless the business invests in workflow software

Oh right. Yeah, nah, management always get angry at the reports, because they illustrate things they don't like.

So they continue to hate IT, blame IT, and not do what IT recommend. But they still want their reports (typically as the very ammo with which to shoot IT).

1 example that isn't legal and applies to office workers who sit in front of a computer all day... just one.

Reading from screens definitely sux compared to e-ink or real ink

Bring on cheap 10" e-ink screens (I know they exist, $$$) for technical PDFs, but I lurve me some e-ink for novels. No eye strain, super light, cheap enough to get into impulse buy territory, battery goes forever.

Would love me some of this but 599 USD um....

So now that your intention to leave has been made public, have you seen any actual change in the environment to try and retain you?

You've mentioned before that the CEO iirc, is quite amicable and aware of your contributions to at least some degree, so I would be quite saddened to hear that nothing his being done.

Do you think anything they're likely to do will make you want to stay, or is this likely an inevitability now, just awaiting the right opportunity to make it complete?
