Haha all good. I'm not a particularly vain person. Very blunt about my appearance over the years, and still very happy that despite a mount of shit, I'm healthier now than I've been in a long time. Feelsgoodman.

I used to fly over to Houston, TexASS in my mainframe days in 80s and 90s, I choose to drink instant in those days when in the US or Canada unless there was an Italian community, bit like Briz Vegas in those days, coffee was boutique and finding proper coffee was a feat.

All done. 2 hours of chitty-chat. Nothing set in stone. No news to share.

Still 2 hours means at least they liked what you had to say. Good luck regardless.

    Wow,

Just going through the process of buying land and building a house, and fuck me does it really make me wonder how people in other industries can be so disorganised and well hopeless, and yet in our industry if we don't respond almost immediately and are organised, shit just hits the fan. I wonder what life would be like in the average IT department if we ran it like some of the clowns i've ran into in the building industry/banks/real estate agents in the past week. Its just a non stop comedy of fucking useless and disorganised for people that are supposed to have built this as a career for themselves over many decades, and not a single fucking brick has been laid yet, this is just the paperwork section..... Fuck me i'm going to be ropeable given this whole process will likely last till just before christmas once you include build time. The jokes on them come final inspection, me and my wife are super anal retentive on things.... so there gonna love us, especially if they keep this up.

I think it depends on the industry. When the supply/demand is in favour of the vendor, they can be as shit as they like.

I keep telling IT people to charge for variations like a builder. Of course, in the real world customers would just fuck off somewhere else. But damn, builders have got it sweet when it comes to being able to charge like wounded bulls while withholding work.

I've friends in various non-IT industries (several mechanics, a brickie, a chippy, and a fridgy)

they may be hopeless at paperwork, computers, but they can fix shit, lay bricks, cut wood squarer than I can even after measuring 5 times, and keep my beer cold just fine.

problem for us in IT, because anything with electricity running through it is a computer right (according to everyone else), we're expected to be experts in everything, instead of just one area. Dunno why that's different for doctors and lawyers they're allow to specialise. why am I expected to know everything about anything from setting the time on the oven*, through to coding nuclear simulations for a Cray.

*time on my oven is set to 12:00 by the last power outage. my microwave doesn't have a clock thankfully, or it'd be the same.

Budget 10% on top of final build cost. And get a registered building inspector to go through the whole house. Worth the $500+ as they'll check stuff you wouldnt even know to look at. eg. proper waterproofing on top of tiles and screens in wet areas and shit. Roof sealing quality/joins and other stuff. Ensuring external floor vents are above certain ground levels compared to land rise ( so rain doesnt fuck your foundations ). Like you'd be pissed if the plaster started moving and cracking 2 years into ownership. because getting the building to rectify after 2 years is a shitstorm.
