It's a pity we can't put them to something more useful, e.g. picking up rubbish instead of whatever nonsense they're currently doing

What's amusing is how petrified they are of losing their jobs by pissing off the wrong people, while simultaneously not at all worrying about losing their jobs for abysmal output.

I've opened my mouth quite a few times over now just to see all the colour drain out of people's faces in sheer terror that my words might upset certain individuals. And yet, here I am with my smiling face in the recent news letter and my contracts extended.

I guess that is the key though, yeah?, if they had better output they wouldn't have to be worried about pissing people off. Not pissing people off is the only thing that have :D

Meanwhile I caught up with my old co-workers for lunch, and that company has sacked at least 10 people in the last 6 months for being fuckwits and not performing.

    Like night and day.

LOL you are the contractor, you are there to do the work that the employee's / public servants, won't / can't do, provided you progress whatever KPI middle management person assigned as adequate to keep contractor there, and other management type approve the expenditure against the correct bucket / cost center (which is any bucket that doesn't add cost to the cost center that is fictitiously the cost of running the department, IE additional wages costs), your contract will be perpetual until said middle management gets promoted and new middle management arrives. How else does Public Sector IT get anything done?

When working for local gubermint in Briz Vegas I was amused that the internal sysadmin had a team of 6, 3 full time and 3 contractors, guess which 3 did the work and which 3 did... I have NFI what they did! I do know that the 3 that did nothing complained bitterly when they where retrenched because outsourcing, oh the irony.

The be fair, the amount of overhead placed on public service, to appease the public they are supposed to be serving, is responsible for a large amount of the inefficiency inherent to it.

Kind of. I don't report to middle management. :)

This is also true. Every single bit of bullshit here is because at some point some "Karen" from the public made a complaint.

Yeah, but it told a nice story as I flicked my scroll wheel [1] six times to see the whole thing.

[1] "Flicked my scroll wheel" is as euphemism, as was your "bigger than you thought".
