i feel like people haven't used Exchange for a long time and remember 2003 or something.

Nah, people just expect MUCH more from groupware than any on-prem vendor can deliver in 2020 (particularly if you're an SMB or a highly flexible org and don't have fat Enterprise money, but still want those sweet features).

And that's not limited to Exchange. It's just really fun to take the piss out of Exchange fans, is all.

I just booted up a customers business pc and this was the login screen. We need a new keyboard for the bench now because I spat coffee all over it.

But now you're ranting about that, instead of whatever the last rant was about. Can't have been too important.

cloud = paying to hug someone else’s box. Possibly more than just buying a box yourself.

your box is shared amongst heaps of others, it’s never really your box. Others can mistreat your box and it becomes a sad box. Your box is available all the time except when it’s not, that’s just an acceptable risk. You are no longer hugging this rented box, it’s hugging you now.

I've heard that some people like it when you mistreat their box.

Aren't IT people generally the magical fairies that fix things in the night? I realise that we would all prefer to be improving things than having to fix/patch etc, but to me a lot of the move to cloud looks like instead of working on technical stuff, you just become a conduit between the business and vendors - and I'd much prefer to deal with tech than vendors!

Having interviewed a number of people who entered the IT industry during the cloud stage I'm seeing far more of what you were ranting about in post #1 now than back then - ask most of these people how to build a server and they'll answer "just click deploy template on {cloud provider}", how do you troubleshoot X issue "call {cloud provider}", how would you do X that is not a default config "Oh, I don't think {cloud provider} let you do that" and so on. Hell your rants about people saying things that you've already done are impossible WILL become impossible in the future, because it's not the standard config so cloud providers won't let you do it - vendor lock in will get worse, I've always suspected that the large mailbox limits that cloud providers give you is to make it stupidly expensive and time consuming to move stuff back on-prem, but then you look at the rate limiting they do on outbound traffic and you see that they're also artifically limiting your ability to move providers in a timely manner as well.
