Andrew Bolt the crazy on sky news? thats worrying. is it the India thing? you can always be able to predict his opinions based on US conservative talking points. ie. any covid restrictions are bad. just saying.

Funny tech support issue of the day, person has issues typing, stuck key we say and give a bit of advice of what to do etc. Get a call an hour later saying they had a wireless kb which was in the next room (not where notebook was) and someone had put a stapler on top of it hehe.
reminds me of the old trick of swapping keyboards or mice when there are multiple wireless kb&m users in an office.
The OpEd today was that the Indian flight ban was immoral and all sorts of wrong.
Forgotten how much I hate the hiring process within IT (trying to find a good level 2 desktop person and level 3 infrastructure person). Got a bunch of resumes of people demanding serious $$$$ when all they've done is a course and never actually used the skill in the real world. Ugh.
The problem is good people aren't waiting by the phone, or even looking. They're usually over-employed and getting offers by the day.
If you want *good* people in IT, you need to head hunt.
Which reminds me, I need to send out a bunch of "thanks, but no thanks" emails today.

Pretty much this, great for those of us already inside the tent, bad for the industry as a whole. As someone I know puts it, there's a war on talent. Its been like this for as long as I can realistically remember (i.e. ever since I was no longer scrub level).

Eh it depends, my previous job we'd chat with people to see if we felt like they'd get along with the team, but maybe we were the exception. I had a job interview once where aside from the usual discussions on knowledge etc. went out to lunch with the team and just chit chat about random stuff to assess cultural fit.
I hope its not the exception - my team HAS to work well together so for me, that's absolutely critical. If someone's missing a skill, they can learn it (provided they're clearly a quick learner / motivated) so that's far less important that a group of people who not only get along, but have each other's backs.
agreed. skills can be taught and learned. attitude, approach and outlook cannot.
You hear all the BS about culture being important, then at the interview its all about skillset and price when contracting. (fixed term employment type contracts)
I'm no longer sure which is easier to teach any more. It's assumed that tech is easier to teach than attitude, but honestly both are a nightmare to teach most folks most of the time time.
Attitude, approach and outlook are skills that can be taught as well.
not in my experience. far rather pick the right person and teach skills than adjust attitude.
if you feel otherwise then make your own decision, but on the basis of hiring and managing several hundred employees in multiple circumstances, I know what works best for me.
Entirely depends on the person you're dealing with.
If someone's got Outlook/Attitude issues, that's not up to someone working in IT to fix in my opinion, they may need to see a phycologist who has the right skills.
