i guarantee you no learning is taking place for people like that.
I think they can probably learn. might only be short term, but as long as they're not disconnected from the hive mind for too long then momentum would carry them along.
understanding would be aspirational. that would require thought and that's actively disparaged.

I was hired to do some fiber detection in the area, so used the most accurate tool I know - a digger bucket.

So I've got my marks back for the first subject (literally called "Data Science" and it was 85.33/100). Super duper happy with that, so I'm now plowing headfirst into nightly coding in both Python and R.
Which institution are you studying at? I completed a Grad Cert in Analytics at UNSW recently and it wasn't as rewarding as I thought it would be, most subjects had the option to use R but none of them actually taught it....

Melbourne Institute of Technology. I'll say it hasn't been the hardest course so far, but I have enjoyed it and the build up to doing the main project was good. The marking is quite generous, I feel I should have got 70ish, but will take the 85 . I'm lucky as I have stuff to apply it to at work, so have also dived into Power BI in a more maths way for some data analysis and extraction.
Dealing with a huge India based MSP who opted to restore an entire OS rather than fix a configuration issue and didn't know what the following event meant in their restore job.
"You must reboot the server to restore locked files"
I've been dealing with these muppets for an hour and it hurts.
If their name starts with "T" then I feel your pain. Our global head office has decided to partner with them and all its done is made everything I have to to 3x harder.
They do but I know of at least 2 that fit that bill... both are equally painful. My condolences.

You better believe they'll notice if your performance suffers though.
This is the sorry reason we need to do timesheets. And the entry needs to say something like "Spent three hours walking [TCS|Wipro|XXX] droid through reading a one line informational message".
My colleague just ripped my boss and the VP for not paying proper market rates. Sounds like he's secured the team some raises. I can't believe the crazy bastard did it. Unfortunately he thinks he's put a target on his back and now is wisely planning his exit strategy. Sounds like he's got a few better offers already and I'm glad for him. But all his difficult work will fall to me. FML.
Did I mention we were already understaffed by 3 FTEs and they weren't hiring any with my skillsets?
On the upside, at least you'll be getting paid more?
Interesting that you'll get a payrise out of it. We've had two industry meetups in Hobart recently and one of my colleagues went to them. He said the biggest gripe was local companies not being able to hire skilled staff. When these companies were asked for the skills they wanted and the money on offer, he said many lols were had amongst the IT people there. It is perfectly acceptable to work unpaid overtime any day of the week and expect 24/7 uptime, yet a tradie can come and go, delay things by weeks, leave things half finished, expect overtime without fail and no one bats an eye lid. He gave this as an example and it led to lots of awkward silence
But they're a big company and we outsource the risk so what could possibly go wrong?
