My boss has been uninstalling problem updates in WSUS by declining them instead of approving for removal.
Found this out when the Outlook Safe-Mode patch was approved and got installed on a batch of machines. Was told "it's been marked for uninstall". Nope, definitely not.

Make them read that or similar and (if you or your boss has the power) get them to write a summary of the attacks and how their innocent appearance was a terrible outcome for the deceived.

I mean in the context of high availability and putting all eggs in one basket.

If you use the cloud poorly, then things will get screwed up regardless of private or public cloud.

    :(

Ask him if he'd let some random cold caller have access to his bank account because "he needs to do it now".

Is he 70 years old and senile? What was his excuse?

I suppose it depends on the industry. We're in mining/resource consulting. If you don't use computers you're inefficient and wasting billable hours.

    Putting out fires right now.

Request for maintenance window over the weekend: Denied
Request for maintenance window weekday morning 6am-8am: Denied
Request for maintenance window weekday evening 9pm-11pm: Denied
Request for maintenance window weekday during business hours: Denied (as expected).

Well, that server we couldn't take down to update the licence on since "Its too important" is now dead since the license has expired....

Anyone looking to hire an extremely jaded sys admin

Well, I guess you can install it now. I know it happens (not asking you, just a general comment), but why oh why should a server need to be taken down to install a licence?

I hate my job sometimes, but the toys I get to play with make up for it... some times...

I take it, its the same for most people here?

Your org structure is fucked, you shouldn't have to request a maintenance window - you should be able to notify that a maintenance window is happening - done.
