Core i5-8400 upgrade to Core i7-9700

    I'm in a very similar situation, as I also have an i5-8400, paired with a Z370 chipset motherboard. An i7-9700 should drop right in, but maybe make sure your motherboard bios is up to date.

    Not sure if it's worth it though, as the benchmarks show very little gains at 1440p, and the i7 is not that cheap.

    The new 10th gen Intel is incompatible, so it may be worth flogging off the CPU/Motherboard, and buying new 10th gen CPU/motherboard, assuming you can reuse your DDR4.

    You would wait until the formal release and availability 10 gen Intel stuff..

    There's usually a little bit of a flurry on the secondhand market at that time..
    As people look to dump their current gear for the latest and greatest..

    That is usually the time to look at secondhand gear..
