The Boeing 747 is a rarity around Melbourne these days but it did a chartered flight new years eve with a flight over Antartica. Took off on 31/12 at 6.30pm and returned 1/1 at 6.50am.

You capture the majesty of these planes extremely well. Nice shots.

Do you have special access at the airport? It seems you are right THERE.

Excellent!. Love the vorticies spawning from the cowling fins on the 380!

odd to hear the 747 is becoming a rarity - in 400 form even, I must be geting old :/

Awesome photos! The detail is amazing, especially considering it would have been low light in both cases!

Can I ask how far away you were, and the lens you were using?

Thanks everyone.. Yeah, the 747 is to be retired from the Qantas fleet in 2021 so there's not many out of Melbourne anymore.

I shoot from a public road that is parallel to the main long/wide runway. The initial wide shots were from about 2.5kms away, with the side on shot about 400mtrs away..

Gear is a 5D Mark IV + 500mm f4 + 2x Extender, so essentially 1000mms.. The clarity of $15k worth of kit speaks for itself..

Obviously not me but this is the size of it..

Not only is it huge but it's actually quite light. Light as in 3.5kgs + body, so around 4.5kgs..

My previous lens was a Sigma 150-600 sports and that was just under 3kgs but that was f5.6 -6.3 so realistically you couldn't put an extender on it.

400mm is a touch too short and the 600mm is 4kgs which is just too heavy to be handholdable over a day. I've also heard the 600 is front heavy so you'd constantly have to wrestle it which would get tiring quick. if you hold it like the above photo, it's balanced nicely so doesn't get uncomfortable over a day..

Great stuff. At 1000 mm the time of day plays a massive role in clarity. Still, you were there to get the shoots, its not just the 15K of gear. I click on every thread you make V, great stuff.

Someone pointed out that I was using a 1.4x, so 2 out of the 3 heavies were at 700mm instead of 1000.. That time of day I cbf remembering.. But yeah, the clarity you get from the 500 II is just astonishing.

I always try and remind people that even if they're not happy with what they capture, it's better than the shots that they didn't take. You make your own opportunities and it's never just 'luck'.

Seriously can't wait for Avalon 2019. Going to be heck of a show.. my mind and cameras are ready :)

    Thanks all..
