    of course you are
i had a winge email from my host saying over 5gb email limit
so ive zipped & downloaded all the emails as backup,
when playing around learning, i find that if i unzip the email folder on the pc
all the emails have 0 bytes & therfore, useless to restore
if i upload the whole zip file then restore them its ok
is there some rules to doing this or thats the way it is

I wouldn't be surprised if it (cpanel and/or the webmail app) doesn't export each email as a "stand alone" file to suit your purpose - just the one big archive (which is probably just an extract of the database).

You could try back them up by getting an email client like outlook, connecting to the email server, and then allow it to download all the emails. Then extract the emails from the program.

But really, emails aren't worth saving. If you need them for some business purposes, extract what you need (attachments etc) and print the email to pdf, and then store/log those files properly. That's basic QA. I do that with all my personal emails that need it (receipts etc).
