    Hey all,

found a few documents from an ex worker here that have passwords to open them in excel. Sadly nobody knows the password. Does anyone know of a technique/program to remove a password to open an excel spreadsheet, all i can find are ones that require you to be able to open the spreadsheet first then unlock (which doesn't work as i can't even open the file).

    Help, this is rather frustrating.

straxx is good for unprotecting worksheets and workbooks, I think there's something also for pwd protected on open as well.

Save this as macro in the locked file, and run it:

So, basically have it brute-force the weak 16-bit password hash...

Nice but like some others you forget to read the OP. The problem is that the FILE is locked, so these "internal" password unlocking solutions are useless.

Okay - In at least Office 2010, password-protecting the file wraps it in an AES encrypted container, with the key generated using SHA1 with a salt. Good luck trying to crack that - you'd have to brute-force it, which'd take a very long time.

If it's a password protected xlsx file, then OpenOffice / LibreOffice aren't even be able to open it - they don't know how to handle the Microsoft Encrypted Store container format.

If it's a password protected xls file, then OpenOffice / LibreOffice need the password to generate the key to decrypt the workbook.

Hi all, sorry for taking so long to get back to you, hadn't seen there were any replies.

Yes that is correct, the file is locked, it isn't an internal password, but a save as > with password job.

We managed to get a hold of the ex-employee, guess what, eh can't remember. Or he doesn't want to help us at all (something about being fired... which stealing from the company i think justifies it but hey). I haven't had any luck with this file, running one particular app from lastbit.com on one machine for the last 215hrs but it hasn't finished. All others are not succeeding or it is not for file locks.
