It's all about framing. I had a pair of Dell R710s running for my home lab. If you've ever used one of those, you know they are NOT home lab material due to the noise. Then work gave me a 48 core Epyc server with 384Gb of RAM, and it's still noisy, but substantially quieter. Now my wife remarks how quiet the server rack is. The extra PC with my 1080TI + 1050Ti in it is so quiet, you still can't tell from sound whether it's on or off.

I am actually thinking of water cooling it, but not really sure if it's worthwhile. My case is not really designed for water cooling, and the investment will probably just result in a net loss.

A couple of Noctua fans, on the other hand, may be worth it...

Damn, an epyc, lucky boy. I run a dual socket 2011-3 SuperMicro 36-bay storage server. Took a lot of work but I got it to a point where it's nearly dead silent. Like my desktop is louder now.

    Nice work :)

I had considered changing the fans on this server, but when I say "gave" it's more an indefinite loan. Have to return it if I quit just like my laptop etc.

Still might be worth it as I'm intending to be here for the long haul, but also wondering if a dense sound dampening foam on the inside of the server rack might help.

That's a shame, yeah working on the rack sound dampening might be the smart play for now.

I fail to see how, it's now the same price as a shit 3090 ($2500 odd) pulls also 300w (like 3090) and makes $2 less. maybe if you bought them all at $800 on release then yes they're the most cost effective card ever, but otherwise nah

More like 230w, its dam easy to cool (since no need to worry about ddr6x) and cost less than a k before the boom..

Well maybe before the 30series release. I wouldn't touch AMD GPU for mining now, too much work to get it runs optimally.

No wonder my Vega 56 reference sold for $805

MELB - Vega 56 Reference (Asrock Phantom Gaming X) Flashed to Vega 64 | OCAU Forums (overclockers.com.au)

I guess someone got a bargain

    ..
I guess I really didn't know to mine with it... only getting a couple bucks a day.. (with Nicehash)

It's subjective. Personally, $800 for a Vega 56 is definitely not a bargain for what you're getting. It's already triple what it should be selling for. The people paying $1200 aren't gamers, or they'd be buying 3060Ti/3070 around the same price.

Just miners doing mining things. Don't be sad that you sold a V56 for "only" $800. eBay have 20% fees, buyer protection chargebacks scams, etc.

i wouldnt buy one, despite the great mining performance
for me its about resale - i've only bought mining cards that are still decent for gaming at reasonable prices - if things continue well i'll make a profit, if it falls through i'll keep one for myself and on-sell the rest and get my money back

Am seeing a trend of some miners selling off their older rigs/cards like the RX480/580's etc (still not cheap though)
