I know many project management packages have such a thing but I'm looking for something on a small scale where I can communicate with people and it all stays together as one 'conversation,. or whatever - rather than endless emails back and forth that can get lost.

Say I was developing a website for someone - all the discussions, Q and A, around that that remains there for both parties to check.

Ideally something free / open source that I could host on my existing server space so I'm not paying ongoing fees for (storage) someone elses "space"

    Any ideas?

Nah use Slack/MS Teams/HipChat/Jira/Trello or Zendesk or something.

    Wordpress plugins
wp-client 'sounds good' - but costs a few $ for something that's more of a hobby than anything.

What about clinked? anyone used that?
(it seems good on the face of it, but hasn't been updated for two years sine wp ver 4.5....)

    other options
I found the following links -
    https://blog.capterra.com/free-and-open-source-crm/
    https://www.capterra.com/customer-relationship-management-software/#affordable

and it's another case of down the rabbit hole.

    I need
    - basic project management with milestones
    - lists of items which can be checked off (eg customer supplies me with these things 1,2,3 and I check them off when I get them)
    - easy customer communication (rather than having numerous emails back and forth - somewhere central for easy reference)
    - I only need a small number of 'users' say 1 or 2 at my end and up to maybe 5 customers.

As because this is essentially a hobby, not a real income earning business, I want something that is free

Given that fairly basic need set I would have thought that something would be readily available.. but reading all the blurb I really can't see which one might be suitable.

Any experience in this regard greatly appreciated. :)

Gotta spend money to make money. JIRA does everything you need, just write it off on tax.

Aren't you paying for source control hosting?

    I don't doubt it.

hahaha if I were making ANY money that would make sense. Its just a hobby I'd like to develop into a business
I just wanbt a SIMPLE way of keeping track of my progress on a project and a simpel way of communciating with clients / keeping it all in one place rather than email everywhere.....

Not sure exactly what you mean by "source control hosting" ?

If you scroll past the stuff for Jira, there are a bunch of alternatives you can investigate. Hence let me google that for you and not 'I'm feeling Lucky'.
    If it's a hobby, you can't justify spending $10/month?

If you want to build off what you're doing right now, source control is important too.

If you're developing websites and you aren't familiar with source control then you've got some problems in your future, best of luck.

Trello is pretty swish for small projects, gotta admit. But as for the comms part, it doesn't really do it. Buuut, it does nice checklists, so you can at least tick things off and use the kanban-lite thing to track progress.

then watch the customers communicate via sms or email all the time - really, just let them communicate with you how you want and keep yourself organised. Then update them via their preferred method of communication.

If I remember correctly, Asana in addition to task management can handle incoming and outgoing emails and integrate them in to the tasks.

I would agree, it's hard to herd people in to your preferences. I reckon if you wanted to do all that (the updating via their preferred method) you'd wind up spending more than you wanted to on a project this size.

What about an unlisted FB page? That give you a public forum to present general stuff, and individual forums for each customer via private messaging, all nicely sorted for you. And free.
