    Just be wary of some of the newer DDR5 kits which are a trojan horse for micron rather than hynix, huge difference when dialled in.

    Yeah sounds like Will doesn’t plan on doing much dialling.

    Yes, I wanted a lot of RAM for running VM's. I'll see how I go playing games with the slower memory and will swap it out if it impacts too much but since I intend buying an RTX5090 we'll see how that goes with that.

    In the meantime, I'm building an identical replacement MB+CPU for a friend, and I've put in a 6000 MT's 64 GB kit of Corsair CMK64GX5M2B6000C40 which started up at 4800 MT's and I checked it out with Memtest and it passed. I've enabled XMP1 and it's running at its full 6000 MT's although I haven't tested it with Memtest yet.

    A friends Aorus Z790 Master X with a 12900KS equipped with two sticks of 6000 MT's 64 GB kit of Corsair CMK64GX5M2B6000C40 started up at 4800 MT's, I've enabled XMP1 and it's running at its full 6000 MT's and has successfully passed Memtest. Unfortunately, my rig which is identical other than having 192 GB in four sticks also started up at 4800 MT's but locks up instantly when I enable XMP1, would anyone know if I would have better luck if I replaced the 12900KS with a 14900K?

    Try XMPII, it's less tight than XMPI. But yes the memory controller on 14th gen is much better than 12th gen. However 192GB will be hard to run at rated speed. Speaking of which, what is rated speed on that kit?

    It's a Corsair CMK192GX5M4B5200C38 which runs at 5200 MT's, it's the one and only 192 GB kit that's on the Gigabyte QVL list for my board, when I spoke to MSY they said that if I bought anything else and it doesn't POST at normal speeds, I can't return it if it doesn't work, I can only do so if it's on the QVL and then doesn't work. Given that the kit cost just over a grand I wasn't keen on buying anything else that was 192 GB and then hoping it might work.

    According to the Gigabyte memory support page, it states;

    * Speed dropping policy according to Intel processor specification (XMP disabled):
    DDR5 4800 MHz speed drops down to 4400 MHz when 2 DIMMs of the same channel are populated e.g., DDR5_A1/ _A2. Please adjust your setup according to the recommendation above.
    DDR5 4800 MHz speed drops down to 4000 MHz when 4 DIMMs are populated (1Rx8/ x16 modules).
    DDR5 4800 MHz speed drops down to 3600 MHz when 4 DIMMs are populated (2Rx8/ x16 modules).
    * When running XMP at DDR5 5000 MHz or higher, the system’s stability depends on the CPU’s capabilities.
    * When enabling Dual-Channel mode with two or four memory modules, it is recommended that using the same capacity, brand, speed, and chips of memory modules.
    * Memory modules listed as above is for reference only. Due to massive memory models in market, we can only verify some of them.

    Interestingly enough it does seem to run at a default speed of 4800 MT's with all four sticks in there, I'm guessing that's probably because of the combination of having a premium motherboard with a top end 12900KS in there, also for some unknown reason I've only got an XMP1 profile and I didn't see an XMPII option, so it looks like it's manual overclocking of the RAM from this point onwards if I want to bother trying to tweak it, however, I prefer rock solid stability over faster speed. The RAM is advertised as supporting "Intel XMP 3.0 profile customisation." so whatever all these different XMP profiles actually are I don't really have a clue, I've always assumed they just matched the multiple overclock settings on the RAM SPD chip.

    Also, would you happen to know if 14900K's even with the 0x12B microcode are safe to run now with just the default settings (no user overclocking) or is that still a work in progress? Because if it's not a permanent fix I might just stick with the 12900KS and call it a day. Thanks for your advice so far.

    5200 is not much more than 4800. You should be able to get it working. do you have the option of setting XMPII instead of I? Do you know what your VCSA and Memory Controller voltages are?

    14th has always been fine. it's the 6GHz boost clocks at stupid voltages at sustained periods of time that kill them. Just lock the CPU multiplier at 57X and you're good as gold.

    I saw Hardware Unboxed had a review on memory for 9800x3d between a 8000 ( I think ) , a 26/6000 lit, 32/6000 ......anyway something like that and I like the look of the 26/6000 . Some motherboards didnt like it but I see the Carbon 870e passed......
