Convenience. Also, it's funny you think chooks you get from butchers are any different to the ones Woolworths cooks.

i'd say there is less chance of buying a plumped chook from the butcher.

    I doubt it.

Supermarkets might not have high standards, but your average butcher has lower standards then a supermarket.

You are either going to be paying a lot more then a supermarket, or its cheap for a reason.

At some point you need to.. and thats when you could buy a hot chicken for that day if you wanted to.

Nobody here is suggesting you buy hot chickens every day, or that you plan to buy a hot chicken on X day.

Like you, out of anybody, would even have the slightest of clue on the matter. Ethically sourced produce is a really big thing right now and only gaining traction.

No, I don't need to. I can think outside of supporting these shit conglomerates that feed off the lazy and stupid. You can't because you're under the impression that you're somehow educated and empowered on the matter. You're not. It's how they use the population against each other to firm up their own market share.

Ethically sourced produce is a completely different story to quality, but its pretty clear you are only interested in being told the animal was happier then it really was.

Yup, you make sense now.

Its easy to pretend you aren't a massive contradiction when you can hide on the internet

Don't know about your end of the country, but over in WA the Coles chickens seem to be better than the Woolies ones.

Woolies for me. Never really got into the IGA ones and haven't had a Coles one for years. I go there late and sometimes they're 5-6 bucks.

As for the argument as to why not cook your own? Convenience.
If I'm getting a roast chook from woolies it's to shred it and immediately have it with a fresh loaf of bread and some butter and salt and pepper + lettuce for a quick sandwich. Or I'm throwing it onto some nachos. I'm never buying a woolies roast chook to eat as a roast chook.

If I'm wanting a roast chicken for dinner I'm buying a chicken, brining it, seasoning it, roasting it slowly and making an evening of it with gravy and veges.

    They're two entirely different beasts.

I can't deal with either these days, not since they sealed them up in a plastic bag, so the over-brining seeps out and you end up with a rubbery, salty boiled chook. All in the name of being able to keep them on sale for longer.

Happy to pay the extra and get something actually tasty from a local charcoal chook place.

I have recently discovered the joy that is Coles Roast Pork. Same idea as roast chook but a little pork roast with crackling and everything. Woolies also had a beef brisket once which wasn't bad but a bit dry. But it's a lottery around here as to whether you will be able to get either, or even a chook. We get a bag chook probably once every two weeks, easy food for the fam, plus strip the leftovers and make stirfry or whatever.

Agree, however when I do grab a ww chook I do mash or oven chips, gravy and some frozen beans/peas... it's easy and makes more of a meal of it, to me anyway.
Normally I would if it was only a few dollars or even five more, but often now they're $20+ around here which is getting a bit steep.

Coles, it has better tasting stuffing. Best for Chicken/stuffing/chips sandwich.

I'm happy with the Woolies product and don't generally like shopping at Coles, so easy decision.

plus the deli staff at the local Woolies are really nice, and give me a tub of all of the crispy bits of chicken skin off the brackets in the oven, if I'm there as they are unloading.

I used to work with someone who would buy a roast chook from Woolies, then proceed to peel the skin off and throw it in the bin. Regardless to say, we were never friends. They were smart though, buy it at lunchtime, eat half, take the rest home. Very cheap lunch on the go.

Anyway, I have a charcoal chicken place 200 metres down the road that does chicken/chips/salad pack for about $20 so my choice is easy. I actually prefer Red Rooster over colesworth, especially because you can get chips while there. I've never noticed a difference between the colesworth ones, usually depends whether they overcooked it or not (which it regularly is) as opposed to any particular flavouring going on.

But while I'll occasionally cook one myself for dinner, for lunch on a sunday I want to be able to wander down to the shops, pick up some fresh rolls and a chook and come home and have lunch, not come home and spend an hour and a bit waiting to cook it. If I'm going to do a roast at home I prefer not roasting a whole chicken, rather do some seasoned pieces or cook it in a sauce.

coles for me, but honestly you're better off paying that bit extra for a propper charcoal chook from the T/A shop. Much bigger bird usually 2-3 sizes bigger and much more flavour

Can't believe this joke of a thread has such polarizing comments, it's a cheap, cooked chicken tastes good end of story.
