It's hard to focus when there is no-one to sit in the chair and focus on, so there were many attempts at this. I put a tall cardboard tube on my chair with an x marked on it at face height and focused on that which helped a bit.

I used the 50mm 1.4 with two brollies set up - one camera right and one right above my head slightly camera left. Backdrop was just a black sheet. I used a shallow DOF because I didn't want any detail coming out in the crinkled sheet behind me.

I was going for a closer crop and a bit of a dirty cowboy theme. I get so sick of seeing head and shoulders for portraits, so I thought a tighter crop might be more confronting.

Nice shot - and especially so considering you were shooting and posing yourself.
It feels really authentic, the closer crop works - the brim of the hat cutting through the right eye is my only tiny niggle, but it's not like positioning that thing is going to be easy when you can't see yourself in the viewfinder

    Brilliant shot Baz...

Only looking at it on my phone, can't wait to see it on a big screen. Looks really well composed and agree that the tighter crop works well.

Takes me straight to an older time of evil cowboys and indians...

Normally self portraits are pretty non-noteworthy, but this is great. Maybe a little bit of smoke from the cigar, other than that, fantastic.
