disappearing ssd space on macbook

got a macbook. deleted 1.9 GB... yesterday. Today is 351MB...
No matter how much I delete.. it eats more..

no I didn't download a lot.

 

Have you tried installing an app to see where all the data is on the SSD? Something like OmniDisk Sweeper?

The page file is a file on your drive that is used to store some of the contents of your RAM when you start to run out of memory. A hibernation file is similar, its a copy of your RAM that is made when you put it to sleep so that if it runs out of battery while sleeping, it can restore its state once powered back up.

 

Back up your stuff and blow away mac os for a fresh install?

If so then if you do not use hibernation you can turn it off and save a bunch of space.

Run command prompt in Administrator mode, and type :
powercfg -hibernation off

Then press enter will turn off hibernation and should delete the hibernation file. Auto update if set to download updates, will also just keep downloading them and stacking them up. You either install the update, or delete them and turn off auto update. Not entirely recommended however.

Also empty the recycle bin.

I also don't / never reinstall a os on a mac. I don't have any disks

 

Might not help, but try running the maintenance scripts manually. they delete old log files etc.

unless the OS is way out of date you don't need discs to reinstall, it has a built in recovery partition you can use.

downloading something like Disk Inventory X from www.derlien.com would be a good way to try and find what is eating all the space.

downloaded D. I. X and found a folder called private that can't be accessed or seen in finder under the mac hdd.

Also found Application Support there's a Cache folder with 12.8 GB of files. Necessery? or delete?

You can't delete them. They are necessary for the operating system to work. The pagefile can grow quite large, but is cleared on reboot. It will only be as large as it needs to be though.

Hibernation file will be the same size as your RAM.

 

You can turn off the hiberfile in CMD if you don't need hibernation. powercfg -h off

 

That command is only on windows vista and newer platforms, doesn’t work in mac os x unless OP is using bootcamp.
