I came across this link while looking for a solution to a flash diffuser on the built-in flash on my 350D

    http://www.instructables.com/id/EFWF47HEFPEV2Z6BX8/

Looks like it works pretty well.. anyone tried it?

Now I just have to find an empty cigarette packet.. I'm sure one of my mates will happily hand one over for me to use :)

Problem is that all the cigarette packets in Australia have pictures of gangrenous toes and cancerous lungs on them.

I just use a bit of white paper over my Olympus flash, just hold it there with my finger. I've been thinking about using some of that diffusive plastic sheet from an LCD monitor too.

Just make a similar box-like object from white card.

All the better to distribute the message of smoking kills.

I don't get it. People spend thousands of dollars on their camera gear and then skip a few bucks on buying a decent flash diffuser and make one out of domestic waste instead? Brilliant.

What next? Zoom lenses made from toilet paper rolls and magnifying glasses?

hey, do NOT bag toilet paper rolls. I think they would make good snoots if only they weren't so small in diameter... :p

but it's the whole DIY factor. Why spend money when you don't have to? It looks original, and it also gives rise to much heated debate amongst DIY photographers (black tape is better than silver, white cardboard better than brown etc)

Because you'll look like a right pudding taking pics of your mates / family / whatever with $2000 worth of camera gear and a ciggie packet stuck on top of your $600 flash.

Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against DIY. But if you're going to DIY, then do a really decent job of it: ie. make a flash diffuser carved from a single piece of ebony, cover it in baby-seal fur and use a home-woven silk cloth as the diffuser material. :D :D :D

one of the nice ones i used on my 300D when i didn't have my 430EX was an old film canister. one of the frosted/clear plastic ones. you just cut a little slit down the side of it and slide it down over the popup flash and them put the cap back on. works rather well.

    :D

You should at least paint the box black and put a red line around the top of it

masking tape works well over the flash as well (300D)
when you dont want it stick it on the back of the camera
