I'm actually genuinely curious about this because I like to play female characters in RPG's (let's avoid the conversation as to why for now) and find that the male love interests generally seem to be... well... awful. The worst example so far was in Star Wars the Old Republic MMO with the Jedi Knight companion, Doc. He seemed like such a caricature of what a male would think a female would like and he just would not take no for an answer. I honestly would've spaced him if I could.

So I'm really curious to know, from a woman's perspective, whether or not RPG love interests are ever more than hopeless attempts by man-boy-geek programmers to approximate what they, in their wet-dream fantasies, think that a woman actually wants.

From a guy's perspective, a lot of the love interests for male characters are overtly sexualised to the point of ridiculousness. Miranda from ME2 and Isabela from DA2 are good examples. I'm sure it's great for teenage boys but I find it offputting. They remind me more of porn stars than girlfriends.

Most RPGs in the past only allowed you to play as a male character, so as a straight female you got used to playing out the life of a guy. In itself it wasn't much of an issue as you could 'ignore' being a guy, but there was always an issue in these games where the attention from lady NPCs became very, very unwelcome and you had absolutely no choice in stopping it.

For example in The Witcher, you actually couldn't progress in the game without humping a few ladies, and it just kinda felt like you were being somewhat assaulted because you weren't consenting to what was going on (if that makes sense). It took away from the gameplay and left you feeling unpleasant.

Most RPGs today recognise this is unwanted, so even in the games that are only male main character, you do usually have the option to opt out so you can focus on the game.

Then the RPGs that give you the option to play as a male or female without fail give you an opt out of any romance options, and the nicest ones give you a plethora of options regardless of gender.

I think it's the last part that has caught out my fellow male gamers, they're not used to having to deal with being hit on by members of the gender they don't find attractive. It does take some getting used to, but at least you aren't stuck 'having' to do something to them to progress the game, you lucky kids ;)

But to answer your question - yes they are pretty tropey, but hey the trope works reasonably well. As the teams get more experienced in catering to female gamers, and more women come onto the planning teams, the NPCs get more nuanced which is really lovely. There are a few moments that kind of stick out as something a man would do to a lady more than a lady would do to a man (eg the ass checking out when enlisting Kaidan for the Normandy) but at least they're trying.

I've preordered the standard edition at EB games. The Collector's looks nice, but not extra $100 nice for stuff I'll look at and then put in the cupboard.

So can anyone tell me whether the combat and inventory system is more DAO or DA2?

The more like DAO the better.

well they pretty much threw the development team under the bus after the backlash on DA2. So hopefully less "dumbing down" and more original DAO.

But dont hold your breath. Dont preorder unless you're prepared to be disappointed if it doesn't pan out. :D

There's apparently no modding because the new Frostbite engine its based on doesn't have a "lite & free" version.

I'm waiting for release on this one. No more pre-ordering for me (except Witcher 3 of course).

I really like the sound of this game and I'm dying for a good RPG. It's been a while since I've played one.
