This is terrifying. It seems they deliberately left the legs without cosmetic enhancement.
very cool but very creepy
how sad, hey what do you do, oh im a back up dancer for a robot.
I wonder if the robot is also wearing gold hotpants Actually I don't really care, just ship me some of those Asian girls in said hotpants already
I think it looks completely ugly. Look at those giant hands.
haha its totally out of proportion... looks like tiny head + long arms + man hands...
Damn big hands
It's like an orangutan.
the y have come a long way. Just a few years ago they had trouble getting them to balance.
You'd think ugliness and basic proportions would be easier to fix than balance.
More like Brother Lee Love from Kenny Everett video show...
Uncanny valley means they are getting closer though. This is some impressive technology. Anyone know how hard it is to program a robot to move like that? I would think it must be pretty difficult, but wouldn't it be more difficult to program it to respond to everyday situations like walking down a street?
Routines like that are what robots do best. They likely just manually manipulated the robot through the dance moves while recording joint encoder positions. Getting the robot to dance would be as simple as hitting play.
Like someone else said, though, the most impressive thing they have done is get the robot to balance while dancing. They have put pretty big feet on it, which makes it easier, but as far as I can tell, the robot is self contained and balancing on its own. That is really freaking hard.
+1 for balance (pretty impressive!) but it's not difficult to see why robots will never have the same grace and ease of movement as humans. You've got four little Asian chicks grooving all over the stage with effortless ease, while all the robot can do is stand in one spot and sway a bit in slow motion.
balance wouldn't be hard when all it does is sway side to side
get it to walk/dance and i'll be more impressed
it was practically static, with hand and face movements
pretty cool/creepy though.
I think you guys are a little harsh. Haven't you seen the average dudes down at the local disco?
woah, yeah the movement is pretty impressive.
But for the love of god don't try to make robots look human. That becomes infinitely harder the closer you get. The more human it looks, the more the flaws seem to stand out.
If it was me I'd make it a totally fuckoff awesome looking robot with all gleaming polished metal and stuff. Maybe with lasers. Hell make it cutesy in a robot cutesy way if you need to (but still with lasers). But don't make it look like some sort of damaged human freak show.
If it looked like a robot I would have been more focused on, and impressed by the movement and dancing, instead of distracted by my brain trying to tell me there are serious things wrong with the proportions of that dancing girl (WTF those hands!!).
Also, someone ask it why it's not helping the tortoise stuck on its back
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. I was going to post this yesterday.
Looks like Japan will be the first to fall to skynet
You've obviously never programmed a robot before. Believe me when I tell you, getting a bipedal, multi jointed robot to stand up on its own is a HUGE achievement.
Not just standing - it's hopping on one foot sometimes and doing little leg lifts. Farking amasing!
edit - damn those man hands though...
