Finally got around to looking at my pics from the Duxford Imperial War Museum located near Cambridge in the UK. This is an unbelievable vast collection of assorted aircraft from the Wright Brothers up to Eurofighters.

Some notable planes include Concorde, SR-71, B52, A-10, Vulcan..

I realise i've got really heavy on the processing but when you have a hanger full of literally 10's of planes, I really hate seeing other planes in the shot which make it even more confusing. So there's lots of clarity/blown out whites/gradients but I think the processing suits it.

If you'd like to browse the shots as a slide there on my flicker page..

I'll be adding some more photos to the thread as I went back for a second day.

Edit: re-uploaded pics with a noise reduction

Edit 2: resorted pics so that orientation is consistent..

Did you elevate your camera in some of the pictures? Just wondering how you got some of the photos head on. Or maybe I'm just short

I really like your shots, they bring you in close to the machinery - but did you take any wide angle shots which capture the size of the museum?
Just your description of it being unbelievably vast, I feel slightly claustrophobic being so close to the subject matter in all those shots ;-) It would be good to see some pictures from a bit further away...

Yes, yes you do.. It is such an amazing place.. There's 6 hangers, 4 of which are setup as a walk through display with the other 2 as a mechanics hanger, where you can see conservation in action, as mechanics work and repair aircraft.

Thanks.. that means a lot coming from you..

There are a number of elevated walkways around the hangers. That said, I'm 6'1" and have long arms :) Also some of the planes hang from the roof so are angled down..

You know.. I hadn't even thought of taking any wide angle shots of the museum.. I don't even think I took one, since to me, the shot would consist of a mass indistinguishable planes. But now that I think about it, it's a wasted opportunity. Next time if I ever go to such a place again I'll take some more wide angled shots.

For me, the museum was a chance to get up close and personal to all those famous planes and to capture those up close details. Even tho all the planes are merely tools designed for a single purpose, any functionality or comfort that is helpful to pilots is definitely a last place design decision. It's amazing to see how spartan any comforts are for military aircraft, especially when it comes to WW1/WW2 cockpits, but at the same time, you can't help but be amazed at how beautiful these beasts are.

I saw and felt the SR 71 in action at the 1982 Farnborough air show.

    Mind blowing.

    Great shots.

    More WOW here.

I don't know much about photography, but I know what I like. Great subject matter!

Love the compound curves on the Blackbird. Interesting to see a V1 in the metal too.
Love the Phantom pics. Love the nose shot of the Warthog's GAU-8/A.
Oh who am I kidding, it's all awesome.

Great photos, nice work. Some of the processing is a little heavy perhaps, but it suits the "cold hard metal" of the subjects, so still win.

    So good.

I wish I heard about this place before I went to the UK last year.

Will definitely go the next time I'm there.
