Hey guys, i'm looking to get a new soundcard just to fix up my microphone which doesn't work well with my onboard sound and my old soundcard has died.
I tried a usb soundcard but the quality was pretty shoddy. I found an essence stx online I can purchase for not too much and was wondering do I need to run external power for it to be detected?
I imagine the external power is for the headphone component of the soundcard which I will not be using. I can’t run external power as I’m running it in a tiny case which is loaded at the moment and doesn’t have extra room for me to run an extra molex cable.

    Cheers

Yep it needs molex power to run unfortunately - if it isn't plugged in, the card wont be detected by the computer :(

i would say that would depend on the MIC used.
what is the MIC that your using for this? i started using a relativly cheap $200 USB mic at the end of last year and it was night and day improvement over the mic's that i had previously used (cost no more that $20 usually)

Sorry - didn't use the mic in the Essence ST (PCI version of the STX)

What's your use case? I would imagine the requirements for gaming vs recording studio music would be quite different - with different solutions

The mic input is fine for gaming but not good for music production.

I've been using this card for 6 years. (hard to believe)
    Definitely needs Molex power.

    Output is good.
    Never really used the mic.
Just need it for gaming, and find the webcam mic fit for purpose.
