Looking to extend my wifi signal so that it is stronger throughout the house. Study is in front corner and 2nd living room is diagonally opposite corner, so wifi is sometimes flaky.

Impluse buy today, picked up at Aldi the Bauhn Indoor/Outdoor Wifi range extender - $49.99 (reckons it can pump out signal to 500m in ideal situations). Didn't read the box to closely, but it basically stated what I wanted to do, was mostly sold on the POE port (does not do what I thought it should).

So after playing around with it this evening, I'm not sold on it and it not really performing all that great.

Basically it is just a booster between my wireless and end point. I actually thought it was hard wired via ethernet and POE and then transmits the wifi.

The POE port is only for setup and configuration, no data passes through it (well at least I can't find a option to do so).

I have ethernet points in every room of the house, so which wifi extender is best.

I would like it to work in this way if possible.

ADSL modem/router > ethernet cable to next room > wifi extender > WIFI!!!!!

Eventually when I get all my shit sorted this wifi signal should be able to reach the man cave (aka place of random shit in storage, double garage at rear of block, approx 15m from room where I want to set up wifi extender)

    cheers

IIRC - POE should be on the same electrical sub-circuit to work if it is on the wrong one it won't work. That is the same fuse line. If I look in my Electricity Cabinet I can see two sub-circuits and then Hot Water and Oven.

Looking to stay clear of the ethernet over power.

I am after a unit that takes the signal from ADSL Modem/Router/Hub via ethernet cable, to a unit it a distant location, powered by mains power and then sends the signal out wifi signal on a SSID that I can setup and secure.

    cheers

ok re read your OP.. just get an extra WAP configure it with the same SSID and Password as the main wifi and it will be fine.. "extenders" are a waste of time/ money

So if I have a adsl modem/router with wifi, but the adsl modem side of things don't work, but the router/wifi does, can I just use that?

Go buy a TP-Link WiFi AP (WA901ND v3) flash the firmware, set it to a static IP in the top of your range, feed it with the supplied PoE (Power over Ethernet, NOT Ethernet over Power) injector and then set it to the same SSID and password but on a different channel as far away from the routers channel and clear of the neighbours.

    Job done.

So if I purchase this off ebay:
    TP-Link TL-WA901ND 300Mbps Wireless N Access Point Wifi

and then flash it with this:

    OPENWRT and Forum Help

at dd-wrt they only have support for v1.x and v2.x.

I am going down the right path? Am I even close?

    cheers

Yep, disable DHCP and set it an unused address on your subnet and it will work just like an access point.

No, use the latest TP firmware. Leave OpenWRT for the fanboys and their CLI mess.

No pugs, the v3's shipped with a crappy firmware that bricks its networking. Using the latest allows proper static IP settings and stops in blocking traffic.

    when I see Draytek I gag .....

My parents managed to setup their AirPort extreme and extend it with an additional AirPort express throughout their house with no IT experience (both retired) and when I checked it out it worked properly and it's been working proper since Xmas .... food for thought

You dont want a WiFi Extender, you should be looking at an Access Point.

Once upon a time, before wireless access points were built into routers, you would buy standalone AP's. You can have several AP's all connected via copper ethernet on a switch, and if you set them all to the same SSID but different channels, your devices will roam to the one with the strongest signal.

I have a couple of the TPLink 300Mbps N access points connected to my router and they work fine.

I've used a Dlink DIR-850L AC1200 router as an access point, in the scenario outlined by the OP. Oddly the AP only version of it (DAP-1650) seemed to get bad reviews, the Router equivalent router glowing ones. There was bugger all difference in cost, so I went for the 850L. As others have mentioned, disable the DHCP server, disable login, and just set it up as normal. It's dual-band, wireless devices have no trouble seeing eachother (even across 2.4 & 5Gig), range seems good, and it seems quite fast. There are no black spots anywhere in the apartment, which is quite an achievement.

    Of course, YMMV.

Bit of a thread dig here cos I bought the Bauhn extender a while ago as shown in the op and can not get it to work properly.

I need to be able to get my signal to a building next door, about 25m. I can't use cable because of the driveway in between so got this extender.

I have positioned it outside well within reach of the original network I am trying to extend, but even sitting inside beside my desk pointed out the window, I get full signal strength where I need it, but it continually drops out, the devices I'm connecting to it show 'can not connect to network' for a minute or two after it drops out, then it runs again for a few minutes, then drops out and repeat.

I also have a second repeater at the other end of the house to reach my shed which works faultlessly, but lacks the range I need to get to the other building.

    Any ideas?
