external WD harddrive plugs in, windows detects it ( plays sound)
shows up in computer management, but not in "this PC"
    tried several computers, same thing

harddrive has data on it, what are my options to get it back up and running without loosing the data
is there a quick way to get it recognising again ?

I'd crack it open and stick it in a dock, if it has a standard sata connector. Had a wd drive fail, but it was the usb enclosure, and the drive was fine.

If it shows up in Disk Management but not in MyPC then you'd have a reasonable chance of success with 3rd party data/drive recovery software.

Another freebie is PC Inspector. I've had success with that before today.

Sure, it can take a while to complete, but it's not as if you have to sit there watching it do its thing :)
