Really? What's all that business about how the tank cap should be rated to 1.5 to 2 times the output voltage of the NST if it only puts out half that rating? Have you actually measured this?

Peak power may only be put out during the earlier part of tank cap charging. It doesn't mean you can't charge a cap to 15 kV or even 18kv due to resonant rise (50Hz res with the high inductance of the NST sec and tank cap). This is the one resonance you don't want as it is dangerous to the NST to raise it's voltage. Typically the tank cap should be 1.6 x LTR (larger than resonant) for a static gap and 2.5 times for a sync gap.

The cap rating must also take into account this resonant rise but also the rapid voltage reversal which effectively doubles the voltage stress. Typically you should use a cap at 3 times the DC rating ie 45kV for reliability. The coilers favourite CD caps do seem to be hardy in use and can be run on a lower margin.

The simulation programs can give all these figures in details about the voltage rises with given transformers and tank cap combinations.

I've only stumbled across this thread now but I'm fascinated by those tesla coils.
Tesladownunder your website has some awesome stuff on there. I was particularly impressed by the rail gun and liquid nitrogen stuff.

Where exactly is 200km south of Perth? Would love to see one of these in action ;p.

Bunbury but I don't do public shows. Scitech has my Tesla coil running in Perth though. Work takes 90% of my time these days so I have to be very focussed to get stuff done.

I have new threads here on my latest effects.

But I only make small money ;)

A 1 yen coin shrunk by a coil with a 4kJ impulse in perhaps 30us. Similar power to 2 AK47 bullets colliding head on. The coin only receives a little of the energy. The rest goes into exploding the coil into high speed fragments.
    Details here.

How many hits does your site get, and how much bandwidth has been used?

Hey i just noticed some of your pics in the newest gallery on break.com(Possible NSFW)

You should do a video up for them, might get you a bit of extra spending moneys/more exposure for your site :leet:

    Almost 50,000 hits this month.
The two entries in DIGG and the one in Hackaday plus a lot of Russian and Japanese sites took my downloads to 300GB in 2 weeks and my ISP has nearly run out of his standard bandwidth. Hopefully I will just make it through to March in 3 days. I host my site in the US because it is much cheaper.

Normally things are a lot quieter. Although there was the time when I got 4000 hits from 4 different spanish porn sites but that is another story....

And Break.com pinched those photos without acknowledgement.
I don't mind people using them for anything but not claiming them as their own.

... and now the "Expanding Eye of Sauron".

22 foot diameter. Note the sparks to the tree.

With some dilithium crystals you could almost make 50ft:Pirate:

P.S. Could you use this to cut lawns????
