    Foxconn 8600GT O/C Review

I have here right now a Foxconn 8600GT. Currently the mid range of the new Geforce 8000 series.

The stock 8600GT has the following configuration.

    RAM: 256MB
    Core: 540mhz
    MEM: DDR1400 (700mhz)

The O/C model from Foxconn comes with the following

    RAM: 256MB
    CORE: 560mhz
    MEM: DDR1620 (810mhz)

Obviously the core isn't overclocked, yet the ram has gotten a decent boost, pushing us closer to the DDR2000 of the 8600GTS.

I will be comparing the 8600GT against a 7950GT. While this won't be a fair comparison, it will give an idea of how far off the mid

range of the GF8 series is to the high end of the GF7 range. I will be underclocking the 7950GT to the original stock clocks of

550/1400, as the XFX model is overclocked.

I will be using the following to test performance:

    3DMARK 03
    3DMARK 05
    3DMARK 06
    Need For Speed Carbon DEMO

Anyway as I get started on benchmarks here are some pictures :)

The 8600GT is only a little behind the 7950GT in 3Dmark. I used the following setup:

    CPU - E6300 @ 2.8ghz (400FSBx7) @ 1.425v
    MOBO - Foxconn P35A
    GFX - Foxconn 8600GT @ 560/1620 & XFX 7950GT @ 550/1400
    DRIVERS: Forceware 165.01
    OS: Windows XP SP2 32-bit

    3DMark 03

    8600GT - 17329 Marks
    [IMG]

    7950GT - 21933 Marks
    [IMG]

    3DMark 05

    8600GT - 10689 Marks
    [IMG]

    7950GT - 9808 Marks
    [IMG]

    3DMark 06

    8600GT - 5114 Marks
    [IMG]

    7950GT - 5498 Marks
    [IMG]

Its interesting to see the 3DMark 05 result been in the 8600GT's favour. 3DMark 03 really shows the difference between these cards, and then the 8600GT gains some ground on the 7950GT with 3DMark 06.

Will be interesting to see what NFS Carbon brings. Should install that soon :p

It's a pity, the overclocking results aren't going so well.

Got 700mhz on the core pretty much instantly. But the ram will go to 811mhz, but 812mhz is unstable.

Going to check what chips it is using and check there specifications.

Anyway stock 3Dmark benchmarks added :)

theres a link on the ocau front page where they oc the 8600gt to gts speeds. it would make it not bad (and you can get them for 144 from msy now)

did you get a game pad in the bundle (your pic isn't up for it yet)

Wow. Memory only has a 1mhz overclocking headroom? Nice. :p
It's probly the HSF which isn't good enough to cool the other components.
700mhz core isn't bad so far. Hope you can reach higher though.

7950GT has a far higher fillrate capacity. Hence it's faster in 3DMark03.
If you can overclock the memory a bit more, this should improve heaps.
But when it becomes more shader intensive, it actually competes quite well.

BTW, it's $140 at fluidtek. (A lot of stuff here are cheaper than msy)

No I unfortanatly didn't get a game pad :upset: Foxconn sent me drivers for it, but nothing else :p

700mhz core was only Ntune Stable as well. After trying to bench that, locked up instantly in 3Dmark 03. Tried 650mhz and it got through 3DMark 03, however with a lot of artifacts on the screen. All of that while my memory stays at the stock 810mhz.

Either way stock results with this card were already decent. The memory might not have any head room because the heatsink hardly covers the chips.

Wow, very impressive on the 3dmark06. Can't believe only 300 points shy of a 7950GT, and it's on stock clocks. I assume it catches up (and over takes) in 05 and 06 due to the newer technology? i.e; not always about raw grunt.

Well we shall soon see when I can get an actual result with the 8600GT overclocked in anything other then 03 :p

Tried 650/1620 with 06, and for some reason my dvd drive started opening and shutting after the third test.

Checking my details on the 06 results, it seems the 300 points are all lost in the SM3 tests.

Will see what I can do about that :D

Hmm, guess I'm lucky the Foxconn one included two. I would have thought it would be a standard for these cards to have two of them :)

    sempron 3000+@2.4Ghz, 8600gt 600/1600
    800x600 low 44 fps
    800x600 high 30 fps
    1280x1024 low 42 fps
    1280x1024 high 28 fps
    onboard 6100 800x600 low 12 fps

before anyone comments, i DO NOT play sims2, not that there is anythig wrong with it :)
its just the game that i determine if a gfx card is good before i found out about fraps
