Rules of the thread. Please abide by them:

    1. No "abandonware". The reason I post this is because if I posted every single abandonware site in this thread, it'd get too far out of hand. If you want abandonware, go to The Underdogs.
(Note: I have copied some content from older posts, some of it MAY be abandonware, I'm aware. As of now though, I am not accepting any Abandonware links. The only exception to this will be if a game company "authenticates" a free download release, aka, Rockstar and their releasing of GTA and GTA2)

    2. Posting. If you're going to contribute to the thread, please post a link to either the games main page, or if no main page is available, either an "about" link, or anything else. As a last resort, link to the main download page. That way people clicking on the link can view what the game's about first before having the option to download.

    3. NO DEMO'S. Please, no "DEMO" links. If you want to play a demo, google it. If you want to advertise a demo, search to see if there is already a topic about it, if there isn't, post it in a new thread.

    4. Periodic Updates. I wish to update this at least once every day or 3. That way, if any links become dead, they'll be updated frequently, but I would like some advanced warning from you guys.

    5. NO WAREZ! This one's pretty standard as IT IS A FORUM RULE! WAREZ = BAN REMEMBER!

    6. No "online text adventure MMO" games. Examples of these would be Utopia, Earth 2025, etc... Not only are there too many, but they don't quite fit into this thread.

Additionally, they'll be broken down into 3 categories:

Totally Free - Games that are free to download, play, play online etc...
Free to Aquire, Pay to Use: These are still considered free games, in retrospec. These games will usually have, like, a 15 day trial, or something, allowing you to get a taste of the games before you dedicate money to it.
Pay to Aquire, Free to Use: These games I wish to dedicate to MMORPG's only. The reason for that is because every buyable game could be considered a PtA,FtU game. Therefore, only MMORPG's will fit into this category.

erm, actually it's Mount and Blade...not the other way around ;)

Also why are you listing "pay to aquire free to use games" doesnt that cover virtually every game?? Or do you mean games that you can purchase online and then download - but then there are site offering game downloads on a broader scale!

    My bad, fixed.

Yes, it does, but if you read my statement above it also says that I'm only listing MMO's. Best example is Guild Wars, with it's "buy from the store, but play on official servers with no montly online payments!". Lesser example I put NWN, since it is free to play online, but not a good example (it is MMO, but it isn't on "official" servers, nor is it just fully MMO)

    Fixed link, thx.

Everyone has their own definition of free, I'm just trying to make it more defined. Most threads I see say things like "this game is free, but you gotta buy it first" rah rah... so you know...

Please provide links. I couldn't find any free download sites for Wolf ET or Tribes 2...

Before Matthias Worch got a job in the gaming industry he made an entire episode for Quake called Beyond Belief (likely it was because he made this, he got a job in gamemaking)

It was designed to run with only the shareware version of Quake, so if you download the shareware version and preferably one of the many improved engines out there all you need is Beyond Belief for a awesome quake experience .. beyond that of the original shareware episode

    Beyond Belief
    http://www.langsuyar.com/downloads/downloads.html

I've tried both the official mission packs for Quake , and this is better than the second .. not because the second is bad but because this is awesome.

Good move there on "abandonware". Many people do not realise that abandonware is currently illegal under Australian copyright law. Distributing it is software piracy. Currently, copyright survives 50 years (soon to 70) and the only defence is where you have copied extracts for the purposes of education, review or comment.

Where a publisher puts an old game out for free, this is not really abandonware - it is freely distributed software and you would only need to comply with the company's End User Licence Agreement.

I personally love abandonware and believe it should not be a crime to keep classic software alive if the publisher no longer publishes it or the media it was published on is redundant. The Attorney-General has called for submissions to review our copyright law since even ripping a CD you purchased to your own ipod is illegal in Australia. I am drafting a submission to the Attorney-General to consider including abandonware and other out-of-print media (eg books, old TV shows, sheet music etc) in a 'fair use' defence.

    TOTALLY FREE*

    Doomsday - jDoom, jHeretic, jHexen

Doom engine source port to WinXP/Linux/Mac with 3d graphics extensions.

    homepage: http://www.doomsdayhq.com/
    forum: http://forums.newdoom.com/forumdisplay.php?f=57
    game resources: http://www.jfiles.org

*note: you need an original doom, heretic or hexen *.wad to play original maps. There is a shareware version of Doom which contains only episode 1. But if you dig through old discs, you might find your old doom files.

Thank you all! I've just updated again :)

Chargin: Updated text next to Mount and Blade
    Mr_Smiley: Oops, fixed :)
Ceejay: Awesome find! Since it works with a freely available shareware download, I've put it up. :)
    Kypreo: Good luck :)
Buzzard: Thank you! If anyone does find a place to get legal serials of Tribes 2, or if the Tribes 2 serial offer appears again, let us know.
    orbisfactor: added
Kypreo - 2: I'm skeptical on adding that link at this moment. It is a freely available source download and update, but it does require the full version of the original game to work completely. At this point I won't add it, but if I either get bugged enough, or something happens that affacts it, I'll put it on the list.
devnull: Added link down the bottom of the post.

    Keep them coming!
