Spent an hour or so this morning on free play and liking it so far. I think $30 is pretty bang on for what it is, feels very polished.

    Same. Very nice details.

Steam has 10% off if you own This War of Mine - which is an awesome game :)

my first attempt was an overwhelming failure.

although i haven't watched any 'let's play' type videos so going in blind was a bit of a stab in the dark.

Yeah it's more difficult than I initially thought which is nice. You can be happily plugging away then things seem to get a bit out of hand

they really don't like it when you send little jimmy to the mines / forced child labour.

I never had to send the kids to the mines. They got to see amputations up close and personal :D

My 1st game I played was a total disaster... died by around day 20, 2nd game I got to the beginning of the final freeze, 3rd time I demolished it.

Over 300 survivors, all but 2 places looted, OVER 9000 coal, nearly 2k wood / steel, I did run out of food on the 2nd last freeze day.

Items I didn't use, the bakehouse thingy, I think I had about 6 or 7 hunter huts, I went faith which I found went down easier, 2 automated steam coal mines, 2 automated advanced steel mine, 2 automated steam wood drills and everything close into the city had workers with still over 112 free workers available.

For some reason it's showing as just under US$15 here in Taiwan. Now's a good time to buy.

646 folks survived to the end. Standard difficulty. Used no automatons. Explored all points of interest, so presumably rescued all that can be rescued. I have seen folk claiming they hit over 700... anyone getting that many? I didn't lose many folks... escorted all found with my explorers - so I'm a bit puzzled.

I'm still trying to work out how to just make sure everything is balanced prior to day 5-6. This game is brutally unforgiving even on default settings.

One starting tactic - (only a minor spoiler, and not story related)
Gathering posts... if you are not using them, you are gimping yourself. They double the output of the workers AND keep them warm, especially when you get heaters. And you have enough materials at the start to build one plus a road leading back to the gen. So cover an area that has two wooden crates and steel with one gathering post and send workers off to pick up coal. Then when you have enough for another gathering post, build one to cover two coal piles and readjust workers. Then build some tents etc etc etc :)

When you get it right it becomes a little easy - on the default settings (haven't tried hard mode yet). I sent the kids off to help the engineers research and never used soup, or emergency shifts in my win above.
