Unfortunately I later realised that some of the aquarium community are not as morally or ethically sound as you'd hope, and combined with me never actually buying anything due to my very specific interests the drive was not worth it. QFAS is a great organisation though, full of dedicated selfless people - is Steve Baines still an auctioneer (short skinny bloke, sense of humour)?

older guy? yeah - think so...i turned up late so introductions etc were missed but there was a short skinny bloke doing lots of selling (who i bought the brichardi off i think)

price wise, its an absolute steal (until you get up to the 'serious' fish and rare stuff)....though not having any direct connection with the breeders is a little unsettling (my LFS does a lot of the breeding themselves, and what they don't breed is all done through reputable folk)... like buying anything from anywhere you don't know, its a bit of a lottery... but all in all very happy with what I got and the price I paid for it. None of my local aquarium shops stock much variety with Africans..i struggle to find electric blues half the time... to pick up 5 for $21, 4 mbumba for $20 and 7 brichardi for change out of 30 bucks was a good buy i think.

unfortunately I did all my dough before a nice set of red zebras came up .. hrmph :(

I went to the fish shop today and went along looking at all of the fish, as usual. As I was going along, there was a tank of some type of cichlid (sorry, I didn't note down what they were) and 2 of them were having this weird interaction where they'd swim up and bump mouths and then part again. It looked like they were kissing, but it also looked a bit aggressive. Does anybody have any idea what they were doing?

Could have been Kissing Gouramis, but in Cichlids it's common, and usually referred to as "lip locking". Basically it's either a joust for dominance, or courting.

Sometimes they won't actually lock lips when they do it, but they'll swim in and out - basically fisticuffs.

Before jumping into setting this up I would recommend to do some reading on the MASA forums. The cannister, internal filter and air pump are all pretty useless to marine aquariums and mostly cause more harm then good.

That aside, my protein skimmer was creating plumes of microbubbles sigh... Ive got it running but without air at the moment. I've read that this can happen with new aquariums? That or I cant dial it in to save my life.

Thanks for the replies, yes it looked like "a bit of aggro". They were definitely cichlids of some sort not gouramis, lake tanganyika or lake malawi or something (they have all the different sorts, unless I'd written it down I'd never remember what they were).

It's interesting, I'll have to do some reading about this "lip locking". Fish are fascinating, the tank of fish were just doing their fishy thing, swimming about, and these 2 were swimming off and then swimming back to each other.

Another question: Can you cut glass that's already had the corner cut off it, or would you need to get a new panel? The lids on my tank have the corners at the back cut off for the hoses to go through, but I was considering adding a second filter which would need a bigger access hole for the tubes. Can they cut more off it, or should I just get the aquarium shop to give me some more bits? Is there a strength issue with cutting a bigger corner off? Is it feasible to do this? Thanks.

A proper glass guy can, definitely. We had a guy here to replace a big broken window and I asked if he could take a bit more off the corner of two of my lids. He took them away and brought them back cut on exactly the line I'd drawn and even chamfered the edges down a bit to make them safe etc. No charge on top of the window job!

Yes, thanks, I'll give them a call and see what cost's involved. Obviously handy having a glass guy on the spot to do it, I wonder what they'll say as an actual job. Shouldn't be much. I had a new front part of the lid (the little bit you lift off to put the food in) made at the aquarium shop because I'd chipped the corner and it was cheap for the whole bit, with the knob siliconed on, so it shouldn't cost much.

Easiest thing might be to ring a local guy and see what he thinks, if you were to bring it to him. Might be a 6pack of beer job or even less if he doesn't have to come out to you. :) Ring the aquarium shop and offer to bring it to them too. It's no big deal for someone with the right tools and knowhow, I think.

Doesnt it depend on the age of the glass if it can be cut? Unfortunately no aquarium shops in Tassie cut glass, and all tanks are imported.

Hadn't heard about the age thing. I've had this tank for 6 years or more and it was secondhand when I got it, so it's maybe 10 years old, dunno.

This is just the lid, it's thin glass, it isn't tank glass that needs to hold all the water in. I'm rethinking the idea.... I've got some jumpers in there, so I wouldn't want to take the lids away and if I get a new one cut I'll have to do something with the existing ones. It's sounding more like a pain in the neck than I was thinking.

Like this? :D I got one of my big fish doing it somewhere jag pair, thats how they mate so not always "fighting" just aggressive sex or testing one another mating wise.

Fish porn! Those 2 in your video look like they are doing some kind of mating dance, it doesn't look as much like a challenge as the ones in the shop. The 2 in the shop were swimming off and then just coming back and going "bang" with their mouths and then swimming off again. It looked more aggro. Mind you, I didn't stand there for long, just long enough to wonder what their problem was
