Read the article earlier today that Google has handed a blow to Huawei from further use of the android operating system and that means prevention of current Huawei android devices receiving any further updates.

Kind of sucks since I’ve got a Nova 3i as a backup drug dealing phone but this won’t stop people on xda making custom roms based off androids newer os source.

This is due to the Trump executive order apparently, https://www.bbc.com/news/business-48330310

The move comes after the Trump administration added Huawei to a list of companies that American firms cannot trade with unless they have a licence.
Google said it was "complying with the order and reviewing the implications".

This anti-Huawei movement is growing in momentum..

would be pretty gut wrenching if you bought a modern huawei flagship (mate 20, mate 20 pro, P30 or P30 Pro)...

Intel has announced its no longer selling gear to them either so that kills off their laptop range as well.

Qualcomm, Xilinx and Broadcom have also announced they are not dealing with them either.

So I own a Huawei phone, and the Trump administration has now prevented me from getting any further updates. Hmmm the most litigant nation on the planet. If Google are just obeying the law, I wonder if I can sue the US government :D ?

The US is getting really uptight about having competition, playing dirty the political nepotism way.

Influencing and coercing other countries *umph**hypocrisy*umph*

    Yeah, it's huge.

Even if this does happen... the Chinese market is massive, but of course not as big as global.

Android is open source I take it they mean Google blocked the update of the Google Apps which are not open source.

The underlying OS is called AOSP, Android Open Source Project, but Google was forced to block them from feature updates and the Google Ecosystem (Play Store, YouTube, etc.) AFAIK all current models will continue to receive updates and access to the ecosystem, but it's the future models that's being affected.

In an interview with the German Newspaper WELD, Huawei executives said they already have a backup OS developed.

This is also the reason why they no longer use qualcomm chips and have their own line (Kirin)

It's absolutely true. You can see it apparent with terror ism and how we are now constantly looking over our shoulders.

My Samsung Galaxy phone has the OmniRom version of Android installed, and I deliberately didn't install the Google Apps package which OmniRom are required to ship separately. I use the Fdroid app repository. I don't feel I am missing out on anything important that Google provides, most of the .apk can be side loaded anyway. I am sure with Huawei's resources they will have not difficulty doing similar and bypassing Google altogether.
