Mine isn't as self aware unfortunately so I have to use a broadcast IR device. Would love not to be able to need that middle man so to speak.

I have a Google Home Mini, can anybody recommend me some useful tips on how to make use of this thing before I list it in the classifieds?

Some background information - plasma tv hooked to windows HTPC. 23 mobile devices in the house - 15 android - remainder is apple/windows tablet based.

Link your account to it. You can get commute info in the morning, weather etc. I use the one in the kitchen to add things to the shopping list and convert recipe units. Got a Chromecast? Use it to play videos or music.

On its own, the above and random novelty questions and games are really all you can do. When you get smart home items like lights, heater aircon control, home theater remote control etc is where it starts becoming a staple product in the house.

I recently got a nest doorbell. With its facial recognition, whenever someone comes to the door, all the Google homes announce that "XXXXX is at the front door".

It really depends how deep you want to get into home automation and using its full potential

Man sounds like this shit is deep and downright scary. I don't want it talking to me while I'm in the shower.

Home automation is really the only use I can find for mine.....and also checking the weather in my area before I go out to golf. Oh and the odd random question I need to know the answer to and cbf getting my phone out of my pocket.

Anybody know if its possible to have the Home turn on a chromecast powered TV? Or a TV that would support it?

I've noticed it turns on my TV, even though it's connected to the home theatre, but doesn't turn the hometheatre on.

You mean a tv with Chromecast built into the tv? These aren't supported using assistant.

Sorry that wasn't overly clear. The Chromecast is plugged directly into home theatre. For some weird reason it turns on the TV, but the HT doesn't turn on?

I'll need to look into this HDMI-cec feature.

Yea sorry. I didn't read the post correctly the first time. I edited the post but I still got it wrong

Yea id be checking the CEC feature on the home theatre to see if it's available and if so, allow it to turn the HT on

Yeah ok so it has CEC. But I have no idea how to activate it...

    Worked it out.

While it was turned on on my TV, it wasn't turned on on my HT.

Amazon's Echo will let you change the wake word for them, you can have 'computer' ala star trek etc if you want. Closest google has got to allowing different wake words is letting you say 'hey google' instead of the utterly retarded 'ok google'. Baby steps.

Just plugged my mini back into power after having it sit on the bench for ages.

When I talk to my phone it replies on the mini which is pretty cool or the mini is super sensitive.

I'm using mine to control RGB strip and a Yeight.

Electrical storm here a few Sundays ago fritzed the modem & PC so the Home was out of action for 10 days - none of the previous setups outside of TVs were retained for some reason but it wasn't too hard to restore. I had some "shortcuts" set up for radio stations and Spotify but they were lost.
Was easier to rebuild the PC than it was to get the modem replaced but I've moved on (fuck you ISP that has high customer service rating for some reason).

As of yesterday my google homes have "continuos conversation" enabled.
It was a feature that we could enable in the settings but was only working in the usa.

At the end of your initial query, it will continue to listen for a follow up query or for you to say thanks.

    Eg.
You: Hey Google, what's the weather today?
Google: Its hot as a mofo
    You: And what about tomorrow?
    Google: Same!

    Very cool!

I thought that was only on the Max and hub currently?
    Where do I enable it?
