It uses the open source Jabber protocol, so those with supported clients (and an existing gmail account) can also connect :)

See here for instructions with third party clients. (Trillian, Gaim etc)

EDIT @ 2pm: The official client is now out so Ive updated this post

What I want to know is, where did they get this Google Talk application? For all I know, could be faked screenshots.

But I did try connecting to talk.google.com, no connection. Although I'm not too sure what centericq's jabber connection is like, so it might be a centericq problem.

Should be interesting to see how many people switch over once this is released properly.

just installed it then...one thing i like about it is that it puts all your chat windows in tab form in the same window...and interface is pretty nice (better than msn and icq anyways)...clean and simple....

It wont be long till its bloated and full of ads ..

    Might be worth testing out

Miranda IM is still the best IM client for Windows and Miranda IM supports - ICQ, yahoo, jabber and msn aswell as many other features and protcols . It shouldnt be long till miranda supports Google IM (Aka remake of jabber)

It already does, I've been using it for the past few hours :)
It's just regular Jabber, you need to use the google talk server with your gmail username/password.

    http://forums.miranda-im.org/showthread.php?t=4051&page=2 (3rd post on page 2)

Any client that supports Jabber/XMPP should work with Google Talk...well the chatting part anyway. Voice talk isnt' yet supported afaik by any other clients.

I personally dont plan to use the official client, but I think it's a great opportunity for Jabber.

Very weird, I downloaded the client and put in my details, and it took forever to connect and once it did, any messages were slow as molasses.

I closed that and tried it in GAIM and it was quicker than MSN to sign in and then perfect with messages.

Anyone else find the official client slow?

Is there any way to set an alias rather than have it use your full name?

Not currently. But it is technically possible for them to add such functionality through Jabber gateways.

If you want to use it in conjuction with MSN I suggest downloading GAIM. It lets you combine multiple IM packages in to the one program. Cleans up your task bar ;)

thought this might be interesting for those that've installed it.

HACK: The play numbers on the about screen translate to, "wumpusgame"... so, "play wumpusgame" If you invite wumpus.game@gmail.com and IM that user, "play" you can play 'HUNT THE WUMPUS'

Game is sorta like rpg but text based or something...i dunno..i gave up...can't remember all the keys...

It was setup in your GMail configuration, but if you want to change it, in Google Talk go to:

Settings > General > Account Settings > Name and More

Changing that will also change the name people see on my outgoing email though. I'd like to keep that as my real name and set google talk up to display my online alias. It doesn't look like it's possible at the moment :\
