I'm looking to make some Limoncello, I used to have it all the time after dinner when I went to Italy a couple of years ago when I was 16, now I'm 18 and I miss that amazing taste and feeling of it running down my throat.

My dad has previously tried to make it with some Aldi vodka but it came out WAY to sweet, which was probably more the sweet syrup he used. From all the recipes I see online it says to soak the zest in Everclear, which is high proof/percentage grain alcohol.

Is Everclear or ANY high proog/percentage grain alcohols available in Australia?

EDIT: I found 95% Polmos Spirytus Rictified Spirit at Dan Murphy's 500ml for $58.99. Anything better available?

I'm also interested in finding some grain alcohol - after returning from the USA, my girlfriend has been at me to try to recreate the "190 Octane" drink sold by Fat Tuesday.

Damn, alcohol is so cheap over there. Good times

I made lemoncello for the wife with stacks of lemon peels and cheap vodka.

    Worked out very well.

Is there a cheap and nasty version of 95% alcohol? I want to try to make perfume with my kids and the tutorial I saw said to use Everclear.

for perfume, try methylated spirits - just read the MSDS first to check contents

    Diggers is ethanol + water

    http://www.recochem.com.au/files/downloads/Methylated_Spirits_Sep11.pdf

EDIT: did some reading and found there were some unlisted denaturants in it - not sure if any are odorants

EDIT #2: seems the methyl isobutyl ketone has a smell - which is not good for perfumes unless you want "parfum de bum"

The tax alone is about $80 a litre, so the $70 price for Spirytus is $40 excise duty, $6.30 GST and $23.70 creating, shipping and margins for creator/distributor/seller.

Basically you're not going to get a bottle of it or anything like it for under $50

Any commercially produced alcoholic drink you can buy in a store is taxed by the ATO according to it's alcohol content. This is called "excise duties". Are you paying excise duties to the ATO on your home brew?

Probably won't happen, selling it without an excise license is main the reason people get caught and made an example of.

It really is quite easy but can have extreme consequences if done incorrectly.

Shall we kick this bitch back into life?

He was obviously waiting for the moonshine to age before asking for it.
