I hope they can get this running better on stuff below only the highest NVIDIA cards...Portal RTX needed a 3090/4080 and up to run at anywhere reasonable 60fps at 1440p even with DLSS balanced.

I know the 7900 XT isn't the strongest RT card out but it's roughly equal to a 3080 or 4070 in most games. Without DLSS that meant I was getting about 20fps so I put it down and bashed out a regular Portal run - vanilla game still looks clean for being 16 years old!

RTX remix being an NVIDIA thing I don't have much hope. Shame but tbh those remastered assets are making just as much of a difference as the lighting.

Lots of good upgrades like UW support, Episode 1 & 2 being included in HL2 and dev commentary.

    Documentary is pretty cool too.

Gearing the community up for that Half-Life 2 RTX release, most likely around the RTX 5000 series launch early next year.

Started playing it again last night, forgot how good the environmental mechanics and gun play are, not many games (if any?) have nailed it so well? The commentary mode is interesting but I think I’m going to wait until the rtx version is out for a full play through.

Who's funding this? If nobody, perpetual development cycle or abandoned half way through.

apparently Nvidia but I think only providing the tech, dev effort is not paid from what I can tell Half-Life 2 RTX

such a shame how much they under rate people wanting the finish the story.

new tech for the sake of new tech isn't necessarily a good thing for a game. (look at all the stuff that has come out that they could implement into the game, why do they have to make something like an ice gun or something)

quality of product would be the key here. polished game with good story everyone would be all over.

I think you are misunderstanding what was said.

Valve, and particularly Gabe himself work in innovation.

Yes he could have instructed his employees to just make and finish episode 3 but the team and Gabe himself wouldn't have been happy with it and wouldn't have been motivated to do it.

They are essentially saying they only create projects that they are motivated to do which will definitely means that sometimes stories won't get completed. It also in my opinion means that there is a lack of long term vision for their games. I think their decision to go episodic for such a huge story was also a mistake.

Nah, think I just disagree with the decision making behind how its gotten to this point 20 years later..

How can you not find any one enthusiastic enough to want to work on one of the all time great games? I struggle to find other gamers that have never played or heard of half life (I'm 33) funnily enough if you hardly try to make the game no wonder they haven't come up with anything 'innovative'.

Moving to the episodic format was supposed to allow them to cut production times and keep some sort of regular release cycle. This has been a huge mistake and just allowed them to quietly move on from the franchise after 2 attempts. I think you hit the nail on the head with the lack of long term vision.

What have they done that is innovative since HL2 release? Portal? Alyx all these years later in VR? left 4 dead was good but wouldn't call it innovative.

Their focus has clearly been on other things for a very long time now. Growing steam, steam deck, Alyx VR. But I cant think of anything innovative in terms of game play from them for the life of me since half life 2.

I'm sure you could find a few, but consider that Valve has 336 employees which is barely any compared to other companies that would mean most of them to shift from what they are currently doing.

    Are you sure?

    Portal (2007)
    TF2 (2007)
    Left 4 Dead (2008)
    Portal 2 (2011)
    Dota 2 (2013)
    Virtual Reality (2016)

I do stop there because While Half Life Alyx (2020) is quite an innovation, I feel like the boring room by room puzzles and a few enemies is such a dated concept that I'll only give it half points.

We also have Deadlock (2024), however its another half innovation in my opinion, particularly the gun/auto attack combat, however its very early access so that could change.

Would love to know how many employees they had when they were more of a developer. I just don't see it now. Their primary business is clearly not AAA titles anymore.

See I really only found portal out of that lot to be innovative. After that it was more same same sort of games that could already be found. l4d a coop zombie game, fun but not innovative.TF2 same. Dota much the same as LoL. I get your point with Alyx plenty of innovative VR titles before it was even released. Accessibility to VR equipment also hindering.

again just all my opinion though.
