Okay... but the game IS available right? Talking about warez/pirating I believe is still against OCAU rules.

The game is not available to be played in the way Valve intended it to be played, or it is played in the trailers.

    It's 2020.

    Import it or just wait.

You can make any excuse you like for pirating it but you're not convincing anyone especially with a comment like the below. Just because it's free to specific users doesn't entitle anyone else to it.

Actually I tried importing it, unfortunately due to the way Valve hands out their games, the importer will get the copy of the game, not me.

Just hope this game isn't an "one and done" deal for the valve game devs.
Game trailers look tempting - always want to play more HL but the cost of valve index....Ooof..

I'm sure you've all seen the video from tested, but here it is again:

    https://www.theverge.com/2019/12/19...yx-vr-headsets-tested-index-vive-oculus-quest

They compare all the current headsets, and what experience you can expect in Alyx, and you can definitely get a decent experience with non-valve headsets. Sure, it won't be exactly the same, but I for one will be happy to run it on my rift and see how it goes.
I'm actually really excited for this game, it's the first full-on VR-specific release from a large publisher, that I've been super interested in playing. Might have to upgrade my PC when it gets released - I haven't gamed for years :)

Edit: yep, a 1070 and i5 4560 CPU, 16gb ram. Might be ok?!

i think it's going to need a beefier pc to run it with all the eye candy turned on.
I'm surprised Valve didn't release the recommended specs for the game.

It's source engine, the specs are probably "potato CPU and carrot GFX"

      • Processor: Core i5-7500 / Ryzen 5 1600

I have a gen1 i7 and board sitting next to me with 6 slots totaling 12gb ram...

If the spec said 16gb you might assume the game itself would use 16gb and leave nothing for other applications, in reality the game will be lucky to exceed 2-4gb ram usage unless they've got source engine doing some really crazy shit

Yeah the minimum speca are for the most basic bare bones performance. I was talking for recommended specs for the optimal performance.

Sounds like the most expensive PC game ever.

I had to pay $500 to play Crysis. (PC upgrade)

I'd have to pay about $3000 minimum to play this fully. (whole new PC including graphics card twice as expensive as the Crysis-era ones were at the time, plus a VR setup that costs as much as the whole PC again).

I'd say it's going to be a few years before I ever see this. Perhaps when applicable hardware prices are a half to a third of what they are now.

But I'm actually glad they're moving things forward. Modern PC gaming has been generationally stagnant for awhile.

Ah, I see - yeah that'd also be good, but I guess it'll be "whatever you can afford". There's a list of source-engine 2 games here:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Source_2_games

So if you can run all that smoothly, it'll probably just be a question of how they handle large open areas in Alyx.

Source 1 engine actually kinda sucks.. Or at least Apex Legends use of it, FPS dips in big open areas, seems engine made for smaller locations. Hopefully source 2 holds up better.

Just sell your car. Its not like you'll need it once you get the game! Priorities!

How old is your pc system that you're comparing to crysis for a gaming benchmark?>?

Respawn's customised source engine probably has less in common with source 1 than source 2 does. It was heavily overhauled and changed.

When it comes to valve themselves developing on their own engine I don't think there's anything to worry about, particularly when it's a VR game where consistent framerates are super important.
