Having no end of issues with skype on windows 10 now..
    can't even find my contacts..
one of my main contacts disappeared, and trying to find him through searching shows him as blocked
can't work out how to get it out of 'small' mode to see if that helps anything
can only have 1 chat window open at a time?
have to go back to 'recents' then back into another conversation, then back again to another etc etc
can't work out how to do anything now..

My neighbour complained of a similar issue with his Skype in Windows 7. All his contacts disappeared and the remaining credit in his account is no longer visible and the interface now has an advertisement for Microsoft Office 365 taking up a large chunk of the Skype window. I have better things to do than try and fix my neighbour's Skype problems so he can talk to Filipino women looking for a husband using Skype but if I had tried I'd have removed Skype and reinstalled it if that's possible. A second option in his case would be restoring Windows from the recovery partition in his laptop and then setting up Skype again. The third option would have been formatting and starting again because my neighbour's computer is probably riddled with malware given his liking for looking at porn sites and Asian dating sites. There was no way I was going to do that for my arsehole neighbour.

    New version (8.12) is garbage.
    However,
you can download 'classic skype' from the drop-down menu on the skype download page, which is 7.4 - still works fine.

I think your "Contacts" issue will be in relation to introduction of a new feature, with the unmovable and non-removable "People" app that appears next to your system tray in the Fall Creators Update.
MS seem to be converting program features into OS level configuration, effectively gutting the programs themselves. This was apparent when they butchered the Live Mail program, re-released as "Mail", in Windows 8 to be virtually featureless and seem inflexible to work with.

I don't know how the most sucessful chat program in the world (MSN Messenger) could turn to shit (Skype) so quickly, it is a steaming pile of turd now.
    The UI is horrible.

Last few times I logged on, I had password issues. I reset it and ended up resetting my microsoft account password. I don't remember linking my skype account to my MS account. Only ever used hotmail and skype. When I logged in all my contacts were gone. there were handful of contacts in the list, but I assume they're from hotmail.

    Moved on to discord.

Interesting to see this thread, a week or 3 ago i had Skype issues myself.
Can totally agree that Skype is going down the toilet.

I'd like to dump it and use Google Hangouts, but i'm finding that unreliable and difficult in that you can't run it in the tray as a standalone app outside of Chrome.
Makes hangouts unappealing as something that can sit there when i don't have a browser open.

Then there is Google Allo and Google Chat and Google Duo........

The whole instant message / instant video thing is fucked right now.
Google are missing a real opportunity here.

whatsapp used to use what we say in the app for advertising. Now it's e2e encryption. Do they still ...see our words?

It can have all the encryption in the world, but if Skype is falling apart it's no good to anyone.

No idea, have used it in the past, but it's not really much good as a Skype replacment.
It's tied to mobile only (yes, there is WhatsApp web but you still need the mobile app and a mobile phone to use it) which in certain circumstances can be too limiting.

Sounds like you've logged in with your MS account instead of your skype account by accident.
Exactly the same thing caught me out a while ago.
The difference ended up being my old skype account shared my hotmail email address username.
Try doping the @hotmail / outlook / whatever, or if your issue is the other way around try adding the @hotmail when you log into skype.
You should find your contacts and whatever as they were.

Discord does have some potential, but its maybe a bit beyond my elder family in terms of usability.

Skype is horrid, pretty much has been since M$ touched it with their grubby paws. Shame, used to be awesome, I could travel, forward calls to my Skype number, and no one would know, unless I told them. Now... Most of the time the caller hangs up because the phone has rung out, but I have not even had a single ring... Just a notification of a missed call.

The new UI is also a mess... WTF is it now? Skype, Sonos, even freaking Apple or just making things harder and more complex with their UI updates. A few UI folk need a smack in the back of the head, me thinks...

    Z...
